Chapter Four

Gordon Parks, “I was a Zombie Then—Like All [Black] Muslims, I Was Hypnotized,” Life magazine, March 5, 1965, p. 28.

Sources for the chapter: I’m drawing heavily on an excellent article by James W. Douglass (“The Murder and Martyrdom of Malcolm X”), in a book called The Assassinations that I gave a cover endorsement for when it came out in 2003. Douglass summarizes the investigations recounted in several other books: The Judas Factor, by Karl Evanzz (1992), Conspiracys: Unravelling the Assassination of Malcolm X, by Baba Zak A. Kondo (1993), and the much earlier book by Louis E. Lomax, To Kill a Black Man (1968). Lomax was working on a documentary film alleging that the American intelligence community—specifically the FBI and CIA—had a hand in Malcolm X’s assassination, when he died after the brakes on his car suddenly failed while he was driving to the studio on July 31, 1970.

FBI watching Malcolm X in prison: March 16, 1954, FBI report, captioned MALCOLM K. LITTLE, cited in Conspiracys: Unravelling the Assassination of Malcolm X, by Zak A. Kondo, Nubia Press, Washington, D.C., 1993.

Police inspector comment: The Autobiography of Malcolm X, as told to Alex Haley, Ballantine Books, New York, 1973, p. 309.

“neutralizing Malcolm X”: FBI HQ file on Elijah Muhammad; FBI NY file on Malcolm X, cited by Karl Evanzz, The Judas Factor: The Plot to Kill Malcolm X, Thunder’s Mouth Press, N.Y., 1992, p. 186.

John Ali background: “The Murder and Martyrdom of Malcolm X,” by James W. Douglass, in The Assassinations, edited by Jim DiEugenio and Lisa Pease, Feral House, 2003, pp. 378-379.

“dark night of social disruption”: Evanzz. pp. 226-227.

Ulasewicz: Douglass, p. 390.

Roberts with Malcolm X: Ibid., pp. 390-391.

Assassins come together: Ibid., p. 392.

John Ali on “life in danger”: Evanzz, pp. 247-48.

Malcolm X on “resources”: Ghosts in Our Blood, by Jan Carew, Lawrence Hill Books, Chicago, 1994, p. 39.

CIA report/knowledge: Evanzz, p. 254.

Hoover on “social revolution”: Evanzz, p. 258.

John Lewis: Walking with the Wind, by John Lewis, Simon & Schuster, N.Y., 1998, p. 288.

Louis Farrakhan: Douglass, p. 400.

French knowledge: Douglass, p. 404, citing Eric Norden, “The Murder of Malcolm X,” The Realist, February 1967, p. 12.

Firebombing of house: Douglass, p. 406.

“dry run”: Douglass, p. 407.

“marked for death”: Haley, p. 428; Evanzz, p. 293.

Assassination day: Douglass, citing numerous sources, pp. 411-415.

Trial and Hayer confession: Douglass, p. 413.

Background on suspects: Appendix to Kondo, pp. 203-04.

Ali-Hayer meeting:” Douglass, p. 411. The author notes, “Hayer denied this to Peter Goldman, per Goldman p. 432.”

Ameer death: Evanzz, pp. 314-15.
