Best Business Practices for Photographers [221]
Suppose, though, that you didn't want to go through all that trouble. You could have chosen from the initial screen Select a PLUS Pack, which is a preset package of licensing for a number of common uses. Here's a similar version to the one we just created:
PPCO: Periodical Cover – One Issue: Use on the cover of a magazine, newspaper, or journal. Applies to a single printed issue of a periodical. Includes distribution of same issue on publisher's website. Allows reproduction of cover for promotional purposes.
In Figure 26.17, we've selected that instead.

The next screen shows what you see in Figure 26.18.

This PLUS Pack encapsulates seven different licenses, itemized A through G, as shown in Figure 26.19.

At this point, the process is the same, and you generate the license and download and embed it, as before.
To convey this license to the client, the natural language formatting is your best method. Here is the natural language format for the first license:
Media: Editorial | Periodicals | Magazine (Consumer Magazine) | Printed
Placement: Single Placement on Front Cover
Size: Up To Full Page Image | Any Size Page
Version: Single Issue
Quantity: Up To 1 Million Total Circulation
Duration: Up To 1 Month
Region(s): Northern America | USA Industry(ies): Fashion
Language(s): English
Exclusivity: Non-Exclusive
Placing the above language on the contract, under a section called Rights Granted, and in the invoice and any accompanying printed delivery memo or PDF file will maximize the likelihood that your copyright will be protected. To be even clearer, separate the license to a dedicated page or, in the case of multiple licenses, a separate series of pages and title that page or attached series of pages "License." Doing this is common amongst software companies, and it gives you a document to file away safely. In the instance of a contract, just as there may be a reference to a price schedule in Exhibit A or a note to "see the attached Price Schedule, incorporated by reference here into this contract," so too could you say, "See the attached License, incorporated by reference here into this contract.…"
Some Other PLUS Licensing Examples
For a printed brochure of up to 10,000 copies in all languages worldwide for a year:
Media: Advertising | Marketing Materials | Brochure | Printed
Placement: Any Placements on All Pages
Size: Any Size Image | Any Size Media
Versions: All Versions
Quantity: Up to 10,000 Copies
Duration: Up to 1 Year
Region: Broad International Region | Worldwide
Language: All Languages Industry: All Industries
Exclusivity: Non-Exclusive
In this more general example, we may have left money on the table. A photo on the cover of a brochure should earn more than one inside. A larger photo should earn more than a small one. We also have not included the electronic or PDF version of the brochure. Further, consider that you licensed 10,000 copies with no duration, or you licensed a duration but no quantity. In both cases, you have likely left money on the table. By outlining a duration and a quantity, the client has a window of opportunity that they have purchased, and any undistributed brochures must be destroyed when the duration ends—or the duration can be extended for an additional fee.
Consider the musical act that, when they see the image you made of them in concert, contacts you to license the image for posters that will sell for the
