Blowing Smoke - Michael Wolraich [90]

diversity officer to reinstate and expand the fairness doctrine. The fairness doctrine is a defunct FCC mandate that required broadcast license holders to present controversial issues of public importance in a manner that was, ahem, fair and balanced. Beck has also argued that Lloyd wants to tax conservative media outlets like Fox News into bankruptcy and then redistribute their licenses to minority-operated stations.32

In a rare response from the Obama administration to Fox News attacks, Mark Lloyd addressed the criticism expressed by Beck and other members of the right-wing media. He said:

I am not a Czar appointed by President Obama. I am not at the FCC to restore the Fairness Doctrine through the front door or the back door, or to carry out a secret plot funded by George Soros to get rid of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck or any other conservative talk show host. I am not at the FCC to remove anybody, whatever their color, from power. I am not a supporter of Hugo Chavez. The right wing smear campaign has been, in a word—incredible, generating hate mail and death threats. It is the price we pay for freedom of speech. And I do support free speech.33

The Washington Post also contributed its own analysis of the diversity threat: “Lloyd occupies a midlevel position at the FCC, with responsibilities including increasing broadband adoption in minority communities. He has no power to set policy.”34

Nonetheless, the Great FCC Diversity War still rages at the time of the writing of this book. If you’re reading it, chances are that Fox News has not yet succumbed to the totalitarian rampages of Czar Mark Lloyd the Diversifier.

Phase III: Round Up the Dissidents

Once Obama and his czars finally succeed in dispatching The Glenn Beck Program, they will be ready to proceed to the third phase of the Chavezian revolution: rounding up the dissidents. When incarcerating political enemies, it’s usually helpful to have some kind of secret police force like the Gestapo or the KGB. Obama could use the FBI or the CIA for this task, but that would be too obvious. Alternatively, he could set up an entirely new force made up of . . . civilian volunteers.

It was a brilliant plan, but one of Obama’s weaknesses as a covert revolutionary is his tendency to reveal his strategies in public forums—like a vainglorious Bond villain who reckons that, this time, there’s no way for Agent 007 to escape the shark pool. Thus, Obama made the mistake of disclosing his dissident-repression strategy during a 2008 campaign speech, thinking that his opponents wouldn’t notice:

We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

The speech was not discovered by Glenn Beck, but by the distinguished Nazi-Marxist counterintelligence specialist, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA). He told reporters:

It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, [Obama’s] the one who proposed this national security force . . . That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did. When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.35

Glenn Beck didn’t think that Representative Broun sounded crazy and off base. He played the clip from Obama’s speech during his Fox News show on July 28, 2009. And on his July 28 radio show. Twice. He played it on August 7. He played it on August 28. He played it on September 2 and on September 8. He played it in an interview with Ann Coulter. He played it in an interview with Michelle Malkin.36 (Would he play it on a boat? Would he play it with a goat?)

Beck also invited Representative Broun onto a program that he titled “A Politician Who Gets It.” During the show, Broun described the steps “that someone who wants to establish an authoritarian type of government needs to do”—establish a national security force, institute
