63. When the SWP had been formed several years before, Genora had enthusiastically embraced its programs and philosophies. James P. Cannon had frequently mentioned that “internationalism” was the central principle of SWP ambitions. It may have appeared that Genora was refuting some of the earlier stances by opposing NAFTA. It must be remembered that at this time (1994), she did not belong to the SWP or, for that matter, any political party. Even if she had, Cannon had offered a way out of any inconsistencies. Internationalism, he had argued, meant collaboration “of those people in all countries who recognize . . . our historical problems.” Barnes, James P. Cannon, 17. In Genora’s opinion, NAFTA did not promote collaboration. On the contrary, it engendered capitalistic competition, and therefore she could not support it.
