Doctor Who_ Hope - Mark Clapham [112]
Some day, maybe, said Dave, smiling back at her. But not in this lifetime.
Acknowledgements
Firstly, chunky but wellproportioned thanks go to all the people who read through the book, commented, suggested, and advised, not to mention all those fellow authors who provided manuscripts of their own books, tipped me off on continuity points and otherwise contributed to the process. These two categories heavily overlap, so Ive lumped them all in together, authors and readers alike. In no particular order, they are: Susan Clapham (hello Mum!), Lance Parkin, Lawrence Miles, Jonathan Morris, Sarah Archibald, Jim Smith, Lloyd Rose, Paul Ebbs, Jonathan de Burgh Miller, Paul Magrs, Dave Whittam, Steve Emmerson, Simon BucherJones, Eddie Robson and Kelly Hale.
Huge thanks to Allan Bednar for his fantastic work on making Silver seem more real than my feeble words can manage.
Thanks to all my colleagues at the office for allowing me time off to work on the book, and for tolerating the side effects of too many late nights writing.
Finally, writing a book like this involves a lot of sitting around, drinking coffee, thinking and generally doing things that dont actually look a lot like work. It takes a very special person to understand that these periods of seemingly lazy and workshy behaviour are a part of the writing process, and that a writers free time can be limited even when he doesnt seem to be doing very much. Davina Malcolm is just that kind of special person, and has always been there for me, even when writing this book kept me from being there for her. For that patience and kindness, I am endlessly grateful.
About the Author
Mark Clapham was born in the dark days of the nineteenseventies in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, where he had a relatively uneventful childhood. Upon coming of age he showed his gratitude to the home town that nurtured him by moving straight to London, where he studied East European history for longer than anyone should rightfully think about such things.
Having singularly failed to get into publishing on his own merits, he was recruited by Lance Parkin to write the dull bits of the Virgin New Adventures novelBeige Planet Mars . This led to Simon BucherJones bringing him in to cowrite the highly popularDoctor Who novelThe Taking of Planet 5 . Having built a career on nepotism, he continued the tradition by recruiting talented newcomer Jon de Burgh Miller to cowriteTwilight of the Gods , a New Adventures novel that succeeded in killing that much loved and long running range stone dead. Since then he has written for theOfficial Xena: Warrior Princess Magazine , contributed the second part of a western story to the BBCsShort Trips and Side Steps Doctor Who short story collection, and cowritten an episode guide to hit TV showAlly McBeal .
He lives in Highgate, London, and works for a major regulatory body. This is his first solo novel.
