dirty mouth of yours when you talk about Ms Cowan.’ He turned away again, shrugging his big shoulders inside his leather jacket as if it wasn’t quite large enough for him.

Wolf started walking down the corridor again and Wally and the others all followed.

The Pack was unusually silent as they strolled through their domain. It was a tense kind of silence and Wally decided to ease it with some light-hearted kidding. ‘So, Wolf, You nervous? I mean, we’re almost at the shrink’s office.’

Wolf grunted a monosyllable.

Wally persisted. ‘You just going to go up and knock on her door?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Then what? How are you going to break the ice? Give her some sexy answers to her ink-blot tests? “And what does this one look like, Wolf?” “Another gaping vagina, ma’am”.’

‘No,’ said Wolf curtly. ‘I figured I’d tell her about my father.’

Wally Saddler could have bitten his tongue. This was out of the frying pan into the fire. When Wolf got started about his old man there was no telling what he might do. Wally abandoned the idea of light-hearted kidding and let the tense silence return as they walked down the corridor, past the entrance to the gym, and turned the corner that led to the library.

Just past the library was Amy Cowan’s office. And Amy was standing there, in the doorway. Wally hadn’t got a good look at her before. Now his first reaction was a warm horny approval; from what he could see, she was every bit as attractive as Wolf had said.

His second reaction was shock. Because Amy was standing there hugging a man.

No, it wasn’t a man. It was just a kid. Worse than that, it was that geeky kid from the lunchroom, the one Wally had spotted eyeing up the suntanned girl. The arrogant little bastard who had gone strutting out when he was called to the principal’s office. Marching out of the lunchroom like he didn’t know the meaning of fear. Like he owned the place.

Now here he was, in the arms of this hot gorgeous blonde. Wally stopped dead with surprise, as did the rest of the Wolf Pack. Wally knew it was dangerous, but after a second he risked a look at Wolf. He couldn’t resist it. He had to know how he was reacting.

The expression on Wolf’s face was priceless. Wally would have laughed out loud, except he knew he’d be endangering his life.

Wolf stared at the woman hugging the boy. His face showed an emotion that seemed utterly alien; Wolf’s normal expressions seldom varied from arrogance and rage. But now he looked like an aggrieved infant. The way a baby might look if you whipped its bottle away while it was in the middle of sucking on it. Wolf just couldn’t believe that life was doing this to him. The shock was total. You could see him forcing himself to piece his thoughts back together, like a jigsaw somebody had scrambled.

Wally had to admit that Wolf recovered pretty fast. He started walking again, moving quickly, swinging his long arms and legs in the rolling arrogant stride that was his trademark.

His face composed itself again into an aloof, superior mask.

The members of the Wolf Pack scrambled to catch up with him as he marched past the library and past Amy Cowan’s office without even slowing down, as if he had never had any intention of stopping there.

But Wally was walking beside him and he saw the look on Wolfs face as he walked past Amy Cowan and the kid she was hugging. Wolf shot a look of pure venom at the kid. The kid didn’t even see it; his head was buried in Amy’s shoulder.

Nose in her tits, no doubt, thought Wally Saddler with a pang of envy.

But Amy didn’t miss Wolf’s glance and she shot a look back at him, one of undiluted anger. Like she resented Wolf’s intrusion at this highly personal moment.

For the second time in a minute Wally repressed the dangerous urge to laugh at Wolf. If his big buddy wanted to score with Amy Cowan he’d got started on completely the wrong foot.

Good luck, Wolf.

As they walked to the next corner and wheeled around it, walking fast to keep up with Wolf, Wally realized that their fearless leader was muttering something under his breath. As soon as they were around the
