Evicted From Eternity_ The Restructuring of Modern Rome - Michael Herzfeld [227]
10. Both became successful businessmen by creating cell phone companies; both eventually attained political leadership of their respective countries when they realized that only a party with a nationalistic agenda (Forza Italia, Force Italy; Thai Rak Thai, Thais Love Thais) could succeed; both ran on anticorruption platforms only to be charged with corruption themselves, in trials that, had they been convicted, would have led to their debarment from politics for an identical ten-year period; both managed to escape conviction more or less at the moment of their electoral success; both appealed to the football interests they shared with their electoral bases; both were notoriously thin-skinned in their management of the press, and both creatively manipulated public discourses about "transparency" to their advantage (Morris's article on Thaksin offers many parallels with Berlusconi [2004]); and both eventually failed to stay in power, one losing an election (although he returned to power in 2008), the other ousted in a coup.
