It is not the policy of the United States to discourage countries with freely elected governments. The Republic of China is such a country, and merits our full respect and recognition.
But what will mainland China think of this?
What they think is their affair. We are both sovereign nations. So is Taiwan, and it's time we stopped pretending otherwise.
