Exploring the Labyrinth_ A Guide for Healing and Spiritual Growth - Melissa Gayle West [18]

labyrinth is that it will not let itself be known in quantifiable terms. It can be drawn and walked and appreciated, but literally not quantified or known,” says Ferré. “I think the power of the labyrinth is that it takes us way back to a prescientific time when our minds didn’t rule our bodies, spirits, and souls. The labyrinth speaks directly to the proportions that we are all actually even made of. The idea of sacred geometry was to discover the sacred building blocks of creation itself. There’s something very elemental about the labyrinth that speaks to who we really are at our deepest level, a much deeper level than the shallow one of modern society.

“This isn’t conscious for us now; most people walk the labyrinth and don’t know anything about sacred geometry. They do know, though, that something very powerful is going on that they are deeply touched by but don’t understand. They say ‘I don’t know what this is, but wow!’ They don’t have words for this sort of profound experience of sacred geometry in the labyrinth, because it’s older than our terribly impoverished vocabulary and way of seeing the world, but they know it. They just know it.”

Alex Champion, a former biochemist and present creator of earthwork labyrinths, likens the labyrinth to a huge tuning fork, vibrating with the energy of sacred geometry. When we walk the labyrinth, he says, we are “contained within, and subject to, its energy field. Since the labyrinth is based upon sacred geometry, it’s very good and powerful energy. It’s like the labyrinth is ringing, and your body starts ringing sympathetically once you walk.

“If there are stuck blocks of energy inside your own energy field as a result of painful experiences in life, the longer you work with the labyrinth, the greater the chance that those blocks will get shaken loose, and shaken free, from all this vibrating. It’s an incredible way to get garbage out of the body.”

In our utilitarian culture we have lost all sense of the power of symbols and sacred space. Walking the labyrinth returns us to a pre-Scientific Revolution way of directly participating in the power of creation. Each time we spiral into the labyrinth we walk into a world that contains far more mystery and magic than our literal minds could ever grasp.

CHAPTER FOUR

Making Your Own Labyrinth

Imagine having your own labyrinth: Instead of having to drive twenty minutes to walk the labyrinth nearest you (if you are fortunate enough to have one nearby), you simply step out your back door or reach for a small finger labyrinth tucked away in a desk drawer or resting on a tabletop. Your own labyrinth can be walked day or night, on a whim, whenever the inspiration or the desire seizes you. You can walk in delicious solitude, or if you have a walking labyrinth you can have a great gathering and celebration, all on your own time.

If you have easy access to a labyrinth near you, that’s great. Even better, though, is to have a labyrinth at your home—one to walk with either legs or fingers—or know how to construct a temporary one at a park or beach.

There are two good reasons to learn to make a labyrinth, from the simplest one drawn on paper to a more complex one in your backyard. First, if you take the time to learn how a labyrinth is constructed, your understanding of it will be broadened and deepened. Sig Lonegren, author of Labyrinths: Ancient Myths and Modern Uses, differentiates between “knowing” about a labyrinth using your five senses and “gnowing” (derived from gnosis, the intuitive apprehension of a spiritual truth) a labyrinth using your intuitive, nonrational faculties. Once you “gnow” a labyrinth by drawing one and understanding how it is constructed from the inside out, you can carry its transformative pattern within you wherever you go.

Second, if you have your own labyrinth—even a paper one tucked in your desk drawer—you can use it whenever you wish. And if you don’t have easy access to a labyrinth, constructing your own will be your only way to use this powerful tool.

Even if you have no interest at all in creating
