a part. Put stake 5 at the first mark from the dowel. Place stake 4 at the next mark and stake 3 at the next. Place stakes 2A and 1 at the next two marks.

11. Pivot the rope halfway between the line of stakes you just created and the horizontal line of stakes above it. Make one more line of stakes, beginning with 5 at the first mark from the dowel and continuing down to 1.

12. Take up the dowel and place it in the ground flush with stake 7C Lay the rope at a right angle to the horizontal line of stakes of which 7C is a part. Put stake 6 at the first mark from the dowel and place stakes 5 through 1 at the next five marks.

13. Pivot the rope halfway between the line of stakes you just created and the horizontal line of stakes above it. Place stakes 6 through 1.

14. Turn to Figure 6.3d. Reposition the dowel flush with the stake 8 directly left of center. Lay the rope at a right angle to the horizontal line of stakes that runs through stake 8. Place stake 1U at the first marker from the dowel, stake 1V at the second, 1W at the third, 1X at the fourth, 1Z at the fifth, and 1Z at the sixth.

15. Refer back to Figure 6.3a for steps 15 to 19. Pull the measuring rope down to the left and around the bottom of stake 1W so that the rope is going to the right of stake 1W. The third mark from stake 1W should now touch a stake 4. Place another stake 4 at the second knot from where the rope turns at stake 1W. Return the rope to the vertical line of 1U to 1Z.

16. Place the rope to the left and around the bottom of stake 1X so that it is going to the right of stake 1X. The third mark from stake 1X should touch a stake 3. Place stake 3D at the second mark from where the rope turns at stake 1X. Place stake 2 at the first mark from stake 1X. Return the rope to the vertical line of 1U to 1Z.

17. Place the rope to the right and around the bottom of stake 1X so that it is going to the left of stake 1X. The second mark from stake 1X should touch stake 2A. Place stake 1 at the first mark to the left of stake 1X. Return the rope to the vertical line of 1U to 1Z.

18. Place the rope to the left and around the bottom of stake 1Y so that it is going to the right of stake 1Y. The third mark from stake 1Y should touch a stake 2. Place another stake 2 at the second mark to the right of stake 1Y. Return the rope to the vertical line of 1U to 1Z.

19. Place the rope to the left and around the bottom of stake 1Z so that it is going to the right of stake 1Z. The third mark from stake 1Z should touch a stake 1. Place another stake 1 at the second mark to the right of stake 1Z, and one final stake 1 at the first mark from 1Z. Remove the measuring dowel and rope.

All of the numbered stakes of Figure 6.3a should now be in place. Congratulations!

20. Refer to Figure 6.3e. Take the long rope and place one end at stake 6B. Lay the rope down in the curving pattern of the solid line in the figure using the stakes for guides, until you come to stake 3D. Cut the rope to end at stake 3D.

21. Refer to Figure 6.3f. Place the end of the remaining rope at stake 2A. Lay the rope down in the curving pattern of the solid line in the figure using the stakes for guides. When you reach stake 7C, you’re done! Cut the rope to end at 7C.

Take a moment to admire your handiwork. Remove the wooden stakes and celebrate!

MAKING A CHARTRES LABYRINTH

This simplified form of the Chartres labyrinth (see Figure 6.4a) was developed by Ed Smith, a labyrinth builder who completed a master’s degree on the history of the labyrinth. The “lunations,” or series of crescents along the rim of the labyrinth, have been omitted and the entrance path shifted slightly to allow ease of construction. (For instructions on how to create a more exact replica of the Chartres labyrinth, see the appendix.)

Notice that one of the primary ways the Chartres labyrinth differs from the Cretan is that the center of the Chartres labyrinth is exactly in the center of the circle, unlike that of the Cretan labyrinth, which is off center.
