Flex_ Do Something Different - Ben [57]
62. Advantages of flex at a personal level
We have seen that there are many advantages for the individual of being able to flex and we receive testimonials every day from people who are experiencing this. We have shown why being able to flex makes it more likely that you could:
Cope more effectively in any situation and be more likely to ‘do the right thing’ because of the increased behavioural toolkit flex gives.
Be less constrained by old habits, which means greater adaptability and responsiveness in new situations and those you have not experienced before.
Have an enhanced level of protection against the psychological ups and downs of life that less flexible people are prey to. Research now shows that many psychological and physical illnesses are influenced by the unconscious and conscious mind.
Be able to ‘make it happen’, whatever your goal might be, because you have the most appropriate and effective behaviours in your repertoire.
See more opportunities and fewer constraints because flex makes us more aware of options and alternatives. This brings with it better performance in all areas of life and relationships.
Become more self-actualised and therefore happier and more satisfied with life through becoming more coherent and connected with your own needs, desires and behaviours.
Be more independent and tolerant of change because you are better equipped to deal with it.
Be less prejudiced and intolerant of others. One reason people become troubled by differences between themselves and others is that they are not very good at seeing things from another’s perspective. The person who is able to flex is more psychologically pliable and can see that difference is not (usually) a threat.
Be better able to manage situations in life when things don’t go according to expectation because of having a flexible mind and behaviours.
Be more likely to employ efficient strategy management and to look more deeply at any issue because flex widens perspectives and Do Something Different provides new and unexpected inputs.
Get noticed and cope with getting noticed. Being able to flex and adapt to situations is something that others perceive as powerful behaviour.
Have greater emotional intelligence because there is less chance of an emotional reaction when things don’t go according to plan, or when another person acts or responds habitually instead of appropriately. flex also brings with it greater empathy with others thanks to enhanced understanding of self and others’ needs, desires and behaviours.
Stop personal history repeating itself. Flexible people are much less likely to recycle their past and make the same mistakes repeatedly. A person who can flex is a person who evolves.
Have a more deliberate or distinctive personal style. The person who can flex is likely to be more stylish because they are more likely to do something different and try alternatives. They can also see value in difference and shun mediocrity.
63. Advantages of flex for the organisation
The individual, social and political dimensions of flex can be viewed in an organisational context. Organisations have a personality too – their organisational culture – and it can be just as constraining as an individual’s personality. Organisations get habits, just like people. This can be even more problematic when business or market demands change.
An organisation can use flex in a whole range of areas where habit and entrenched culture are holding the business back. If a company is not doing very well, new
