a separate bedroom with a beautiful Hawaiian quilt on the queen-size bed. The couch in one living room turns into two separate beds, the other cottage’s couch turns into a queen-sized bed plus a futon, so the cottages can easily sleep four to six. (Children are welcome.) Outside, each has a shower for washing off sand from the beach. The only thing the cottage lacks is a TV, but since it’s so close to beaches, hiking, shopping, and restaurants, you’re likely to find yourself too tired at the end of the day to watch the tube anyway.

Princeville Bed & Breakfast Golfers take note: This large home, which looks like something out of Architectural Digest, fronts 480 feet of the fairway and the 6th hole of the Makai Golf Course at Princeville. In addition to discounts on greens fees at both the Prince and the Makai courses, the former Hale ’Aha (“House of Gathering”) offers luxury accommodations in a beautiful Princeville setting, where every detail is thought out: No guest rooms have adjoining walls, thereby ensuring all their visitors peace and privacy. The four rooms range from the well-priced Bali Hai Room, with an ocean view, a private entrance, and a refrigerator; to the Penthouse Suite, where you can splurge in the 1,000-square-foot suite with a whirlpool tub in the bathroom, a private lanai, and 360-degree panoramic views of the golf course, mountains, and ocean. All units get complimentary breakfast, consisting of pancakes or an egg casserole with plenty of fruit, coffee, tea, and pastries. Not appropriate for children.

SUPER-CHEAP SLEEPS

YMCA of Kauai–Camp Naue Attention, campers, hikers, and backpackers: This is the ideal spot to stay before or after conquering the Na Pali Trail, or if you just want to spend a few days lounging on fabulous Haena Beach. This Y campsite sits right on the ocean, on 4 grassy acres ringed with ironwood and kamani trees and bordered by a sandy beach that offers excellent swimming and snorkeling in the summer (the ocean here turns really rough in the winter). Camp Naue has two bunkhouses overlooking the beach; each has four rooms with 10 to 12 beds. The facilities are coed, with separate bathrooms for men and women. There’s no bedding here, so bring your sleeping bag and towels. Large groups frequently book the camp, but if there’s room, the Y will squeeze you into the bunkhouse or offer tent space. Also on the grounds are a beachfront pavilion, and a campfire area with picnic tables. You can pick up basic supplies in Haena, but it’s best to stock up on groceries and other necessities in Lihue or Hanalei. Remember, this is the Y, not the Ritz: They only have one employee who handles all the bookings, plus everything else related to the Y activities. The best way to find out if they have space available is to call a few months before your trip (do not e-mail, do not send a letter, keep calling as they cannot return long distance calls). They will let you know if there is space in the campsite or if the bunkhouse will be available.
