Makahuena The pluses at these very luxurious condos include moderately priced two-bedroom oceanfront and oceanview units, an oceanfront pool, hydro-spa, complimentary tennis courts, a private lava-rock barbecue area, and some of the most dramatic ocean vistas in Poipu. The units have vaulted ceilings and fully equipped kitchens, with top-of-the-line appliances. The only minus we can find here is no maid service. Swimming is just a few blocks away, along the coast, at Poipu Beach.

Poipu Kapili Resort This quiet, upscale oceanfront cluster of condos is outstanding in every area. We like the home-away-from-home comforts and special touches: a video and book library, a spacious pool, several barbecues, tennis courts lit for night play, and an herb garden. (You’re welcome to take samples if you’re cooking.) A golf course is also nearby. The apartments are large (1-bedroom/2-bathroom units are 1,150 sq. ft.; 2-bedroom/3-bathroom units are 1,820 sq. ft.) and have fully equipped kitchens, tropical furnishings, ceiling fans, and private lanais. The oceanfront two-story town houses are our favorites because they catch the trade winds. The two-bedroom units also have washer/dryers. (Common laundry facilities are available on the property as well.) Although the Pacific is right outside your window, the nearest sandy beach is a block away (which can be a blessing because it means more privacy).

Turtle Cove Suites What makes this property so incredible is not only the fabulous location (overlooking the stream and ocean) but also the great eye of the interior designer. It also helps that owner Joe Sylvester and his wife previously owned a furniture and fine arts store from which they could choose the “perfect” items for their four units. Our favorite unit, located on a quiet street, away from the crowds, is the 1,100-square-foot oceanfront suite with a full kitchen and private hot tub, original art on the walls, and a zillion little touches that make this place seem more like a home than a vacation rental. All units (even the $170 one) come with lanais and use of the swimming pool and hot tub; they feature top-of-the-line materials like slate from India, four-poster beds, and marble bathrooms. At these prices, the units are a deal. Book in advance.
