Centered around a courtyard with a burbling fountain, this is a place of peace and quiet, great for relaxing and resting. The owner, Lorna, has a daughter who is a licensed massage therapist and can give you an in-room massage to relieve jet lag and built-up tension. Each room is good sized with hardwood floors, comfy beds, and either a kitchenette (a 3⁄4-size fridge, microwave, two-burner stove, and coffeemaker) or a complete kitchen. All the rooms have terrific pastoral views of the rolling countryside, lanais, separate private bathrooms, and private entrances. There’s a barbecue area outside. Not appropriate for kids under 10.

Kauai Cove These immaculate cottages, located just 300 feet from Koloa Landing, next to Waikomo Stream, are the perfect private getaway. Each studio has a full kitchen, private lanai (with barbecue grill), and big bamboo four-poster bed. The cozy rooms feature beautiful hardwood floors, tropical decor, and cathedral ceilings. Kauai Cove is within walking distance of sandy beaches, great restaurants, and shopping, yet it’s far enough off the beaten path that privacy and quiet are assured.

Mango Cottage A path cutting through lush tropical foliage leads you to this free-standing cottage in the rolling hills outside of Koloa. A skylight in the 550-square-foot bungalow illuminates the full kitchen and living room area. The separate bedroom has a king-size bed with adjoining bathroom. White tile creates clean lines throughout, and there is a queen-size sofa bed in the living room for additional guests. Owner George Coates spent years in the hotel industry and his experience shows in attention to detail and anticipation of his guests’ needs. It’s very private, very peaceful, but just 15 minutes to Poipu Beach, restaurants, shopping, golf, and tennis.

Marjorie’s Kauai Inn This quiet property, perched on the side of a hill, is just 10 minutes from Poipu Beach and 5 minutes from Old Koloa Town. From its large lanai it offers stunning views over rolling pastures and the Lawai Valley. Every unit has a kitchenette with dining table, ceiling fan, and lanai. The new Sunset View unit has a separate sitting area and a futon sofa for extra guests. On the hillside is a huge, 50-foot swimming pool, perfect for lap swimming. New owners Mike and Alexis have kept former owner Marjorie Ketcher’s motto “do one fun thing a day,” and have a treasure-trove of beach toys (from snorkel gear to kayaks to bicycles and even bike racks for cars) to help you live up to the motto. The well-traveled owners (who have owned bed-and-breakfasts for 20-plus years) have spruced up the property, redecorated the rooms with contemporary tropical decor (and added flatscreen TVs), and made this wonderful inn even more fabulous. Every room is beautiful, but my favorite is the Sunset View Room with its own hot tub outside and a view that will linger in your memory forever. Note: The inn is not appropriate for families with young children.
