Cheapest sleep in town during the Oktoberfest.

Hotel Laimer Hof (Map; 178 0380; www.laimerhof.de; Laimer Strasse 40; s/d from €69/89; ) Run by Bavaria’s friendliest couple, this cute listed villa has a relaxed country feel, despite being just five minutes’ walk from Schloss Nymphenburg. Of the 23 rooms, those on the upper floors have the most character and best views.

Angelo (Map; 189 0860; www.angelo-munich.com; Leuchtenbergring 20; s/d from €110/130; ) From the open-plan jazz-themed reception-bar to the superbly composed rooms, the restaurant’s clean lines to the crisp bathrooms, Munich’s newest design hotel is a slick and minimalist affair, but warm and welcoming at the same time. It’s already a firm favourite among Bavaria’s power dressers. The downside is the location in the unfashionable, traffic-plagued end of Haidhausen, but it’s a mere four stops on the S-Bahn from Marienplatz.

Opera-Garni (Hotel Opéra; Map; 5210 4940; www.hotel-opera.de; St Annastrasse 10; r €190-275, ste €285-365; ) Step inside the Opera and you’ll step back in time. This hotel is pure old-world elegance and refinement. Breakfast is served in the garden between graceful statues, and the rooms are stunningly decorated with individual combinations of rich colours and fabrics, antiques, chandeliers and Persian carpets.

Outside the beer festival this cosy, family-run pension is a peaceful base for sightseeing. Rooms are all reached by lift, and most have private bathrooms.
Easy Palace (Map; 558 7970; www.easypalace.de; Mozartstrasse 4; dm €19-27, s/d €59/69; ) Converted from a hotel, this hostel smells a bit like teen spirit, but has a good range of facilities such as pool tables, bike hire and luggage storage. Dorms are basic but comfy.
