Getting There & Away
Direct UBB (Usedomer Bäderbahn; www.ubb-online.com, in German) trains from Stralsund (and Greifswald) traverse the German side of Usedom, stopping at coastal resorts before terminating in Świnoujście (Swinemünde in German) just over the Polish border. Peenemünde is on a branch line; change in Züssow. You’ll also need to change in Züssow for Usedom if you’re arriving from points south or west. UBB’s Usedom day card costs €12.
Click here for ferries between Peenemünde and Rügen Island.
Polferries ( in Poland +48-94-3552119; www.polferries.com) connect Świnoujście with Rønne and Copenhagen in Denmark, and Ystad in Sweden.

ACCOMMODATION
Germany has all types of places to unpack your suitcase, from hostels, camping grounds and family hotels to chains, business hotels and luxury resorts. Reservations are a good idea between June and September, around major holidays Click here, festivals and cultural events (mentioned throughout this book and also on Click here) and trade shows.
This book lists accommodation as budget, midrange and top end. Listings are in ascending order of price. Unless noted, rates include VAT and breakfast, which is usually a generous all-you-can-eat buffet. Places we consider extra special have been identified as .
Some regional variation notwithstanding, budget stays will have you checking in at hostels, country inns, Pensionen (B&Bs or small hotels) or simple family hotels charging €80 or less (per double, less in rural areas).
Midrange properties generally offer the best value for money. Expect to pay between €80 and €150 for a clean, comfortable, decent-sized double with at least a modicum of style, a private bathroom, cable TV and direct-dial telephone. Communal saunas and basic fitness facilities are quite common as well.
Top-end places start at €150 and offer luxurious amenities, perhaps a scenic location, special decor or historical ambience. Many also have pools, saunas, business centres or other upmarket facilities.
To help you determine whether a property listed in this book is right for you, we’ve devised a handful of icons. Hotels with on-site parking, for instance, sport the parking icon, . Properties with designated nonsmoking rooms or floors are identified with . These are very common now and the number of properties that are completely nonsmoking is on the rise. By contrast, rooms with air-con are exceedingly rare, except in upmarket chain hotels; properties that do have at least some rooms with air-con are denoted with . Hostels and hotels offering guest PCs with internet access are identified with an internet icon , while indicates the availability of wi-fi. Places with their own swimming pool
