Ghosts Among Us - James Van Praagh [45]
Your aura is your natural defense against such intrusions. By keeping your aura strong, you ensure that lower-frequency spirits cannot attach to you. I scan my body on a daily basis to make sure my own energy is strong. I often imagine a green light coming from my heart in front of me and all around me. This green light represents healing and love. With my mind, I make my intention: I am in the perfect state of health and filled with love. This is the easiest way to ensure that there are no negative hangers-on in my space.
So the next time you walk to work, stop, turn, and look all around you. Be aware of your environment. Do you feel a cold chill hitting your cheek? Do you hear something that is not there? Become aware of the energy around you. It can have an effect on your body, your mind, and your general outlook on life.
Start now to change your life in significant ways. Become a lot more cautious with your thoughts, both the ones you send out to others and the ones you verbalize. Be more concerned about whom you befriend and where you hang out, where you work, the type of work you do, and even where you live.
Remember, there are a lot of energies, both living and dead, of which you need to be aware because not all of them are working in your best interest. The next time you have a weird and unsettling feeling about a person or place, pay attention, surround yourself with light, and walk quickly away from that person or place. It is up to you to protect yourself from unwanted energies.
Not all ghosts are negative. Some ghosts are more than willing to be helpful influences in our lives. The way to attract these spirits is with our own good energy.

How Ghosts Communicate
It takes a lot of energy for a ghost to make something manifest on the physical level. That’s where we come in. The more willing we are to open ourselves to the existence of ghosts and to educate ourselves about their ability to communicate, the more ghosts will reveal themselves to us. Ghosts attempt to reach us in a variety of ways, including through temperature changes; knocking sounds; familiar, identifiable scents such as perfume or tobacco; and changes in the electricity in our lights, radios, televisions, phones, and so on. They manipulate matter and energy by moving things around, by getting information to us through people or animals, and by leading us off the beaten path. Ghosts will use anything to get our attention. I am constantly amazed when people share their own personal experiences of ghostly encounters because it is almost always something new to me. Ghosts are inventive, and because they are not bound by physical nature, their ingenuity is limitless.
Evelyn, a woman at one of my workshops, once told me that after her father died she would notice when she visited her mother that the house her parents had lived in for thirty years still smelled of stale tobacco from all the years of her father’s smoking.
“I told my mother to get the drapes and rugs cleaned to eliminate cigarette odor. She did. She even gave away my father’s clothes and threw out all the ashtrays. Yet every time I went to visit there was the telltale smell of tobacco.”
“Was he a heavy smoker?” I asked.
“He smoked from the age of nine. There was never a time I saw him without a cigarette dangling from his mouth. Burns and stains were everywhere—on the carpet, on the furniture—and he must have had a hole in every shirt he wore just from falling ashes. The only time he stopped smoking was when the doctor told him he had lung cancer.”
“So you think the cigarette smell was your father?”
“Well, not at first. I just thought that the smoke had gotten into everything. But after the carpet and drapes were cleaned and the smell was still there, I knew it had to be him.”
“Is he still there now?”
“No, the aroma left about a year after he died. I think he just wanted to stay around to see that my mom was okay.”
