Kilauea Fish Market (828-6244; Kilauea Plantation Center, 4270 Lighthouse Rd; plates & wraps $8-14; 11am-8pm Mon-Sat) Healthy versions of over-the-counter plate lunches are served at this island-style deli; delicious ahi burritos are a specialty.
Kilauea Town Market (828-1512; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; 8am-8pm Sun-Thu, to 8:30pm Fri & Sat) Here, you’ll find organic wines, local fruit, herbs and nitrate-free snacks galore.
Lighthouse Bistro (828-0480; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; mains lunch $12-20, dinner $18-36; noon-2pm Mon-Sat & 5:30-9pm daily) This is a well-done town bistro with great wine, local produce and good ambience. The entertainment helps justify the pricey pupu and mains.
Shopping
Island Soap & Candle Works (828-1955; www.islandsoap.com; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; 9am-9pm; ) Though there are several of these shops, this is the most unique on the island, as the soap is made in-house. The business also donates leftovers to local schools for crafts – a plus in our book.
Kong Lung Co (828-1822; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; 11am-6pm; ) This Asian-inspired art and clothing boutique features a wide array of Eastern-fusion tchotchkes as well as pricey souvenirs, reclaimed kimono quilts and children’s clothes
Banana Patch Studio (828-6522; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; 10am-6pm; ) A good place to pick up touristy, ‘Hawaiian-style’ souvenirs bearing local phraseology. Featured items are thei ceramic knickknacks.
Cake Nouveau (828-6412; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; 11am-6pm; ) The closest you’ll come in town to an LA-inspired selection of women’s boutique-style clothes. Ideal for those who have a hot date later and a pretty big budget.
Coconut Style (828-6899; Kong Lung Center, 2484 Keneke St; 11am-6pm; ) Batik, sarongs and a smattering of Bali-inspired island-wear.
Oskar’s K-Town Underground(828-6858; Kilauea Plantation Center, 4270 Lighthouse Rd; www.oskarskauai.com; 10am-7pm Mon-Sat, 11am-6pm Sun; ) A tad hodgepodge, but a great little shop if you have forgotten some necessities for baby or mom. Has a great, though small, selection of gently used and recycled baby clothes.
Getting There & Around
The Kaua′i Bus isn’t yet up to par as the most efficient way to get to Kilauea. Taxis function out of the airport mostly. Rental cars are about the only way to go. For information, Click here.

BEACHSIDE SUSTAINABLE SUSTENANCE
Cooking for the allergic, the health nut or the ayurvedic devotee is all in a day’s work for North Shore chef AJ Deraspe, of Foraging Fork (635-5865; www.foragingfork.com; dinner per couple $300). Following the mantra ‘from the soil to the soul,’ Deraspe is an inventive, hard-core foodie and a well-educated gourmet to boot, with a penchant for local, organic and sustainable farming. Whether it’s a meal drop-off, romantic dinner or larger beach party, Deraspe can cater (pun intended) to almost every diet known to man (he got his ayurvedic training in India and Nepal). Vegan, raw, gluten-free, religious restrictions, you name it, chances are he can whip it up. He can also bring his exotic meals to you for a dinner on the beach or in a garden, should you choose.
