OTHER NEIGHBOURHOODS

FOUR SEASONS Map Luxury Hotel $$$$

3196 8888; www.fourseasons.com/hongkong/; Finance St, Central; r/ste from $4200/8000; MTR Hong Kong (exit F);

The Four Seasons arguably edges into top place on the island for its amazing views, its location close to the Star Ferry and Hong Kong station, its palatial rooms, glorious pool and spa complex, and its Michelin three-starred Lung King Heen and two-starred Caprice Click here restaurants.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL Map Luxury Hotel $$$$

2522 0111; www.mandarinoriental.com/hongkong/; 5 Connaught Rd, Central; r $3400-4300, ste from $5500, Landmark Oriental rooms d from $5200, ste $9300; MTR Central (exit J3);

The venerable Mandarin set the standard on the island and continues to be a contender for top spot, despite the competition from the likes of the Four Seasons. The styling, service, food and atmosphere are stellar throughout and there’s a sense of gracious, old-world charm. It’s also home to a great restaurant, Pierre Click here. The sleek Landmark Oriental, in the Landmark Building just across the way, offers more modern luxury, with rooms designed down to their door knobs.

HOTEL LKF Map Hotel $$$$

3518 9688; www.hotel-lkf.com.hk; 33 Wyndham St, Central; r from $3500; MTR Central (exit D2); (26th fl up)

A great upper-to-midrange addition to your options in Central, Hotel LKF is in the thick of the Lan Kwai Fong action (but far enough above it not to be disturbed by it), and has spacious rooms in muted tones that contain all the trimmings: fluffy dressing gowns, espresso machines and free bedtime milk and cookies. Staff are eager to please, and there’s a plush spa and yoga studio in the building. Prices go down by 50% when it’s quiet.

LAN KWAI FONG HOTEL Map Boutique Hotel $$$

3650 0000; www.lankwaifonghotel.com.hk; 3 Kau U Fong, Central; r/ste from $2400/7800; MTR Sheung Wan (exit E2);

Not to be confused with Hotel LKF, which is a notch up in terms of quality, service and location (this place is nowhere near Lan Kwai Fong), this hotel nonetheless offers good value if you can secure a better online deal than the rates published. The Chinese decor is done with a modern flair and the rooms are reasonably spacious.

BISHOP LEI INTERNATIONAL HOUSE Map Hotel $$

2868 0828; www.bishopleihtl.com.hk; 4 Robinson Rd, the Mid-Levels; s/d/ste from $1250/1480/2480; 23 or 40;

It’s out of the way on the Mid-Levels and the rooms are neither large nor luxurious, but consider BLIH all the same for its good service, swimming pool and gym, and the proximity to the Zoological & Botanical Gardens.
