This fabulous place has 50 immaculate rooms in a block close to Jordan MTR station. Each room has a bathroom, TV, tele-phone (free local calls), high-speed internet and a fridge. But readers have told us that reservations are sometimes ‘forgotten’, so do confirm yours if possible.

The six rooms here are spick and span. If you need to use the computer, Ms Cheung has one in her home-cum-bone-setting clinic next door, where toddler-sized statues of Taoist deities look on from a large red shrine as you surf the net.

This 30-room guesthouse with an affiliated tour agency offers the best deal in the Alhambra Building. All rooms come with private bathrooms, toiletries, TV, phone and free wi-fi; some are locked with key-cards. It can also help you make ticket and day-tour arrangements. Jessie Fu, the young owner, is amiable and speaks good English. You can make reservations on its website.

OCEAN GUEST HOUSE Map Guesthouse $

All eight rooms in this rather comfy place have TV, phone, air-con and private shower.

HAKKA’S GUEST HOUSE Map Guesthouse $

This is the most decent guesthouse in the building and each of the nine ultraclean guestrooms has a telephone, TV and shower. The affable owner, Kevin Koo, is a keen hiker and he’ll invite guests out along with him for country walks on Sunday. Mr Koo sometimes sends spillovers to Ying Pin ( 2771 0888; 2nd fl, New Lucky House) downstairs, which offers basic accommodation.

MONG KOK

Peering out from one of the rooms of this colossal tower hotel, you’d never suspect for a moment that you were in Mong Kok. It’s a triumph for the district. The special guest-room features include multifunction IP phones, DVD players, marble bathrooms and room safes that can fit (and recharge) a laptop. Reception is on the 4th floor and the hotel is linked to the Langham Place Mall Click here. The 20m rooftop pool, gym and spa all command great views over Kowloon.

ROYAL PLAZA HOTEL Map Hotel $$$

The plushness is a bit overdone, but the 671-room Royal Plaza is comfortable and central; the bird and flower markets are on the other side of Prince Edward Rd. The rooms are well equipped, with heated no-steam bathroom mirrors, and some have kitchenettes and wi-fi. The outdoor pool with underwater music is a lounge-lizard’s nirvana. The Mong Kok KCR station is accessible through the adjoining Grand Century Place shopping centre, making this a handy spot if you’ve business in the New Territories or mainland China.

SUNNY DAY HOTEL Map Hotel $$

This 39-room hotel has small rooms overlooking Reclamation St and Langham Pl. The warm russet walls in the lift lobbies are a nice touch, but the litter outside the windows is a reminder that this is Mong Kok. Staff are helpful.
