This 128-room hotel has rooms that look out to the hills, sideways to the bay and directly onto the bay. Eschew the rooms in the South Wing for those in the superior New Wing. Rates are negotiable. There are computers in the restaurant for patrons’ use.

MUI WO INN Map Hotel $

This is the last hotel on the beach and can be identified by the ring of faux-classical statues at the front. It’s a friendly place to stay and rates include breakfast.

MUI WO ACCOMMODATION KIOSKS Map Holiday Homes $

Mui Wo Ferry Pier; Lantau

Several kiosks ( 2984 8982, 2984 2282) run by different outfits on the ferry pier let out rooms and apartments and have photos of them on display. Expect to pay $150 on weekdays and $250 on the weekend for a double room or studio. Not all the places are within walking distance of the ferry pier.

This hostel is a 10-minute walk from the bus stop near the Tian Tan Buddha statue in Ngong Ping and is an ideal place to stay if you want to watch the sun rise at Lantau Peak. Check-in is from 4pm to 11pm (from 3pm on Saturday). From the Ngong Ping bus terminus, take the paved path to your left as you face the Tian Tan Buddha, pass the public toilets on your right and the Lantau Tea Garden on your left and follow the signs to the maze-like steps going up to the hostel. If you visit in winter, be sure to bring warm clothes for evenings and early mornings.

CHEUNG CHAU

Cheung Chau is not really well set up for overnighters. Depending on the day of the week and the season, up to half a dozen kiosks opposite the ferry pier rent studios and apartments.

This 71-room carbuncle on the butt of Tung Wan beach is the only game in town, but it does offer wonderful views across to Lamma and Hong Kong Island. Heavy discounts are available, so call to check.

CHEUNG CHAU B&B Map Guesthouse $

This is an alternative to the island’s only hotel and the rooms offered by kiosks. The 16 rooms are well decorated and have private bathrooms, although some are compact so you might want to look first. There’s a lovely terrace on the roof from where you can catch sunset and sunrise. Get a room on the lower floors for better wi-fi reception.

Agents with booking kiosks on the praya (waterfront promenade) include Bela Vista Miami Resort ( 2981 7299; www.miamicheungchau.com.hk), Holiday Resort ( 2981 0093) and Sea View Holiday Flats ( 2986 9368), but unless you have a smattering of Cantonese or a Chinese friend, you may have difficulty getting what you want at a fair price (though there are photo albums illustrating what’s on offer). Expect to pay $200 to $250 a night for a studio for two people from Sunday to Friday, and $300 to $500 on Saturday.
