The park offers some stunning views that make it worth a couple of days to explore, and you can rent a car from inside the park to tour around. To get here, an express bus (Y65, one hour) leaves hourly at exit E, Kowloon Tong MTR station in Hong Kong, between 8.15am and 5.15pm. In Shenzhen, Sightseeing Bus 1, which leaves from Window of the World, with stops at Dìwáng Dàxià on Shennan Lu, goes to the park; get off at the last stop. A taxi from Luohu train station is about Y60.

Further to the east is Dapeng Fortress (Dàpéng Shǔochéng; 0755-8431 9269; Pengcheng Village, Dapeng Town, Longgang District; adult/student & senior Y20/10; 10am-6pm). This preserved walled town, still a lively village, was built 600 years ago and was a key battle site in the Opium Wars in the 19th century. To get here, board bus 360 at Yinhu bus station; the bus also stops near China Regency Hotel at Sungang Lu. The journey takes about 90 minutes. Alight at Dapeng bus station (Dàpéng zǒngzhàn; ) and change to bus 966. Faster and easier is the Sha Tau Kok Express ($60, 90 minutes, hourly departure between 7am and 6.30pm) at Suffolk Rd (MTR Kowloon Tong, exit C). At the Dapeng bus station change to minibus 966.

SHENZHEN

Shenzhen offers all sorts of body-perfecting services, from massage to manicure. Try the Queen’s Spa & Dining (Huángshì Jiàqī; 0755-8225 3888; B1-5th fl, Golden Metropolis Bldg, Chunfeng Lu; 24hr; Gúomào metro, exit B) near Guómào metro. This spa wonderland offers aromatherapy and different types of massages (Y168 to Y218; a minimum tip of Y30 is mandatory). The pools, fruit bar and sleeping capsules allow you to lose days inside.

Hong Kong dollars are no longer accepted in Shenzhen, only Chinese Renminbi (or yuan, abbreviated as ‘Y’). For around Y20 per hour, you can access the internet at most of the hotels listed in this chapter.

To keep pace with Shenzhen’s explosive growth, there is continual and rapid expansion of the area’s transport services, especially the rail systems.

Boat There are seven jet-cat departures ($110 to $145, one hour) daily between Shekou port ( 0755-2669 1213) and Hong Kong between 7.45am and 10pm. Six go to the Macau ferry pier in Central, and one heads to the China ferry terminal in Kowloon. The same number of boats leave Hong Kong for Shékǒu between 7.45am and 8.30pm. Thirteen ferries go to Hong Kong airport (one way Y260 to Y290, round-trip Y360; 30 minutes one way) between 7.45am and 8.15pm. The same number of boats leave Hong Kong airport for Shékǒu
