mindfulness. By staying present for the truth of what is happening—without either turning away in fear or clinging to hopes that somehow this is all going to magically turn around or prove to be a false alarm—I’m able to tap into the deep animal in me that loves this planet and wants to protect my home, my son, and all I hold dear here. My love for that animal guides me in finding ways to be of use while also continuing to find pleasure in being alive.

I am mindful that no one person can save the world, and each of us can do something important to make a difference.

I am mindful that the changes in the planet are happening faster and more ferociously than scientists predicted. There’s no turning back the tide of change that is in motion, and we need to open our hearts and minds fully to what is happening in order to engage in meaningful and effective work.

I am mindful that there will be great loss of life and enormous destruction to ecological systems, and that families and communities will be torn apart. There will be unimaginably huge numbers of people we cannot save from harm, and we can save our collective humanity by choosing to share the resources of the planet equitably rather than each hoarding what we can for ourselves.

I am mindful that love is the most powerful force for change and that keeping our hearts open, no matter how challenging things become, will keep us connected and capable of meeting the trying situations ahead.

I am mindful that I’m carrying tremendous despair and that I need to continuously allow that despair to crack me open and teach me greater courage and compassion.

I am mindful that there are many who live in denial and will resist change until they are forced by personal circumstance to respond, and they will come around in their own time. My job is to not get distracted by how others behave but rather to find my path of contribution.

I am mindful that all of existence is a great mystery, and that in the grand scheme of things stars, planets, galaxies, and universes are born and die, and it is the natural order of things. And the mystery is so much larger than I can understand in this human form. I, too, was born and will die and return to that mystery, and things that are incomprehensible to me now will make sense from another perspective.

I am mindful that the arts, friendship, laughter, ocean waves, birds in flight, the sunset, a beautiful song, and so much more sustain me as much as breathing, and they are what inspire me and make life worth living and protecting. Acting out of anger, giving in to despair, or burning out make me ineffective and isolated, which only compounds the problems.

I am mindful that finding like-minded, like-spirited comrades is essential to keeping up my spirits, fostering creativity, expressing love, and keeping me going.

I am mindful that we are in uncharted territory and that those who claim the mantle of leadership have failed us miserably. It is necessary to turn from all conventional wisdom and open to completely new paradigms in human relations, both to each other and to the natural world. We need to let go of economic systems that are based on winners and losers and create relationships grounded in the sacredness of life and creation. And we are all equally well equipped to be leaders, speak our truths, and offer insight and direction.

I am mindful that the earth has gone through evolutionary upheavals before and has always found her way back to being a hospitable place for life. And every time she came back renewed she was vastly changed, and new life forms and new natural formations appeared and thrived for thousands of years.

I am mindful that there are forces and spirits in the unseen realms that are here with us, available and able to help if we invite their assistance and honor it when it arrives. Regularly engaging in ceremony and prayer keep us connected to that power, and these rituals need to be brought back more broadly into our individual lives and communities.

I am mindful of the importance of self care, of living a healthy, balanced
