BEYOND THE CITY LIMITS
Mere minutes by car from central Akureyri are some of the best lodging options in the area.
Hamrar campsite (off Map Click here; 461 2264; hamrar@hamrar.is; Hamrar við Kjarnaskóg; sites per person Ikr900; Jun-Aug; ) This huge campsite, 1.5km south of town in a leafy setting, has newer facilities than the other site, and mountain views. There’s a good kitchen and laundry room, ample shower rooms and internet access.
Lonsá (off Map Click here; 462 5037, 895 1685; lonsa@simnet.is; Hörárbyggð; sb/linen Ikr3300/4200) About 2km north of the city limits, this pleasant option sits in a well-tended garden full of colourful petals. Made-up beds are in a lovely annexe with an inviting living room and guest kitchen. Sleeping bags go in a separate building that feels older and much more dorm-like.
Pétursborg (off Map Click here; 461 1811; www.petursborg.com; s/d without bathroom Ikr5900/8500, with bathroom Ikr8400/11,800) A great retreat from the city, this pleasant farmhouse on the edge of the fjord has cosy, well-furnished rooms and a wooden summer house (Ikr10,000) sleeping six. There’s an outdoor hot pot and a barbecue, a guest kitchen, and a large lounge and dining room. Breakfast is included. Pétursborg is 5km north of Akureyri, on Rte 817.
Öngulstaðir (off Map Click here; 463 1380; www.ongulsstadir.is; Eyjafjarðarsveit; s/d/tr from Ikr6000/8000/10,000) This friendly farm, gallery and souvenir shop offers comfy accommodation in a range of rooms as well as an on-site restaurant if you don’t want to head back into town to eat. Öngulstaðir is on Rte 829, 9km south of Akureyri (cross to the eastern side of the fjord before heading south).

Today the rooms are modern, with standard furnishings, and it’s a truly inviting place to stay, with plentiful coffee-table books and agricultural bric-a-brac. Don’t miss the seductive hot pot out back.

All have private bathrooms and are comfortable enough, but we thought Harpa was a bit better.
