Instant Interviews_ 101 Ways to Get the Best Job of Your Life - Jeffrey G. Allen [115]
Then rewrite the list with the 1’s first, followed by the 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s. Leave some space (or use your computer) to insert phone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses.
You now have a prioritized list of all your many instant interview investigators.
This list is what recruiters call a job intelligence network—supercharged.
Now you’re ready to floor it!
Ask Instant Interview Investigators Right Away
Don’t let your ego or your feel-low stop you. You must get busy before you overthink. You must not second-guess what every investigator will say or do. These are not like offerors (Do 41).
Call each person on the list. Here’s the script.
You: Hi! This is Candi Candoo. Hope you’re well.
Ron: Hi, Candi! I’ve been fine. How are you?
You: I’m doing great, but I didn’t just call to say “Hi!” I need your help.
Ron: What’s up?
You: I want to find another job, and I know you have many contacts. I need you to give me some suggestions about who to call.
Ron: So you want me to refer you to people I know?
You: Yes.
Ron: Well, I think I can do that. But I’d rather see if they’re looking for anyone first.
You: I really appreciate that, but I don’t want to impose on you.
Ron: I am busy, but I really don’t mind making a few calls. What have you done? I really don’t know that side of you. Do you have a resume?
You: I’ll tell you what. Let’s do both. For the ones you’d like to call, I’ll e-mail and mail my background to you. I’ll mail you some business cards too, so you can pass them around.
Ron: That’s perfect. That way I’ll sound halfway intelligent and can help you more.
You: Thanks. Now how about the ones I can contact myself?
Ron: Well there’s Kermit, the newscaster I see at the club. Vidal, my hair-stylist. And Andre, whom I play tennis with. I’ll give you their contact information.
You: Thank you!
Prepare Your Background Highlights
Just use your letterhead and title it “Background Highlights.” Give an introduction and then start each item with an action verb. This is not a cover letter, broadcast letter, a resume, or any other direct communication to an offeror. It’s just a helpful guide.
It reads like this:
Candi is the daughter of my college roommate. I’ve known her all of her life, and I recommend her highly for any opening you may have. Among Candi’s many positive attributes is her ability to easily communicate with others.
In her last job as an associate vice president with Standard Finance, she inherited a small new business department of three trainees and only one senior loan agent.
Within eight months, Candi hired and trained a full staff of nine agents. She increased the loan business to almost three times the volume.
I am proud to recommend Candi. Her contact information is:

Send Each Investigator a Gogetem Kit
The gogetem kit consists of your background highlights sheet, 25 of your business cards, and a handwritten, dated thank-you note in its envelope with the investigator’s first name that reads:
It was great speaking with you!
My background highlights and business cards are enclosed.
I look forward to hearing from anyone you refer who can benefit from my contribution.
Please let me know by e-mail when I’m referred.
Thanks so much,
Candi
Follow Up in One Week
If you haven’t received a call or e-mail confirming receipt of the gogetem kit, find out by a call.
Why a call? Because you called initially. Why that call? Because you probably didn’t receive a reply.
You’re an I.I. now. You know a phone call is strictly for setups and follow-ups. E-mail is for the convenience of an investigator who’s helping you as a favor.
Then follow up every week by a call just to check in
