Instant Interviews_ 101 Ways to Get the Best Job of Your Life - Jeffrey G. Allen [126]
Take as much as you can get your hands on. It’s either stuff you can fill out creatively at home or stuff that will fast-forward you into that department through the employment lobby.
Discuss How the Manager Will Lubricate the Hiring Process
This might be by opening a job requisition or generating a work order. It makes no difference what it’s called.
Just learn all you can about the timing, who has to sign off (usually the needager’s higher-up), and how you’ll be notified.
. . . And that’s how you do the Saturday slip!
If you get a chance during the week, here are five back-door openers for you to use when you call.
Use them to write your own short opener, just as you did with the Saturday slip.
Hello Mr. Barton. My name is Stuart Norcross. Are you too busy to speak with me?
I’ve been reading in the newspaper about International Industries’ expansion. There are a number of ways I can assist with it, and I’d really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you.
Do you have a few minutes you can spend with me next Monday morning?
How about 9 A.M. or 11 A.M.? I’ll be in your area on my way to an afternoon meeting.
Hello Mr. Barton. This is Stuart Norcross. Do you have a moment?
I wanted to let you know that I’m sending you a resume today.
As I mention in my cover letter, the research I’ve done on International Industries leads me to believe this is a perfect match for the project manager opening.
Before I send it to your HR department however, I wanted to speak with you a moment about what you’re really looking for in someone you hire. I planned to send you a copy as well.
Hello Mr. Barton. We’ve never met, but I know of you by your great reputation in the electronics industry. I’m Stuart Norcross.
When the project manager position opened up at International Industries, I said, “Perfect.” This is exactly the opportunity I’ve been seeking!
If you’ll spend a few minutes with me on the phone now, I’d like to discuss how I can contribute to achieving your goals.
Do you have a few minutes to talk?
Hi Ron. You and I will likely become good friends! My name is Stuart Norcross, and I’m a project manager with Competition Corporation.
I noticed your display ad in the Camptown Gazette looking for senior project managers.
My qualifications and knowledge of our business fit exactly with the specifications.
Why don’t we spend a few minutes to talk about it? Is this a good time for you? (If he says, “No,” say:) “When would be a good time for me to call back?”
Hi Ron. I’m Stuart Norcross. Can you spare a few minutes to talk now?
From what I’ve read, International Industries is looking for project managers. I’m calling you directly because my qualifications are not only exactly what you’re looking for, but I have worked for Competition Corporation. I have a demonstrated knowledge of the consumer electronics market. So I’m calling you now to arrange an interview for tomorrow. Are you available at 1:30? I’ll be near International on business.
Now that you’re hip . . .

Do 95: Making a Maven an Interview Mentor
Mentoring is one of those words like networking. Nobody quite knows what it means.
Except us. We know, because we just decide! A confused mind does nothing.
So here’s our definition:
Somebody impressive who gets you more interviews faster than anyone else.
Here’s how to make a maven a mentor.
Make a List of Maven Maybementors by Category
Just write down the name, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address of each. Prioritize the list with the most impressive, connected, and compulsive person (a major maybementor) first, then in decreasing order.
Break it down by category like this:
Former Supervisors
It doesn’t matter whether the supervisor knew you that well or even liked you. Mentors act out of a desire to achieve a goal. In this case, getting you interviews.
