Instant Interviews_ 101 Ways to Get the Best Job of Your Life - Jeffrey G. Allen [135]

by the escort there.

This was another booking, and I wrote it down. “Okay, got it. AM Chicago. WLS-TV. Be there at 8 A.M. Fine.” Chicago was just another whistle stop.

I eventually wound my way to O’Hare International Airport, checked in at the hotel and flopped down to sleep. My escort picked me up the next morning. A few phoners and she whisked me off to WLS.

Drove in, signed in, checked in. The sign on an easel said, “AM Chicago.”

Whoa! Did you feel that? The house is a-rockin’! What’s this? I-I-I’m from Los Angeles. I know that feeling. Is this the great Chicago earthquake?

Everyone, everything was buzzin’ about the new host. She was making a movie. Someone mentioned “purple.” So we had a guest host. My escort said, “You’d have loved her! You guys would have become best friends. She’s going to change the world.”

I said, “Oh!”

Even in my altered state, I got it right.

Oprah is quite simply passion personified. Her success couldn’t be due to anything else, for she had nothing else. (Nothing you’d see outside of herself, anyway.)

Raised by a strict father from age 13. Me too. What’s that all about? Age 13, strict father—little more than a smile—unimagined success.

She just “went for it.” (Rhymes with “Winfrey.”) These days she “goes for it” with that same passion.

Pratfalls? Sure. Regrets? That she didn’t do more.

Those words at the beginning of this Do are hers. They say it all.

Wherever you look, there are people who make a living telling others what jobs they should do. It starts with child guidance counselors and ends with adult career counselors.

Well-intentioned folks with their tests and texts. They should be accountable like criminal lawyers—goof and your client’s sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. Solitary confinement, without the possibility of parole. (Until this little book finds its way into the prison library.)

They’d do more good on a busy street corner dressed like Harpo holding up a sign that reads, “Do what you love—success will follow.”

Need the DOT (Dictionary of Occupational Titles)? Hardly. Gimme a break. Embarrassed to sound lazy? Dumb? All that money wasted on a master’s in fine arts?

Stop. Here. Now.

What would you like to do? Your hobby raising parakeets? You’d rather clean cages than eat? Fine.

Find a bird vet (maybe yours) and tell her you’re ready to rock. Instant on her.

Go over to that bird sanctuary and find someone who’ll appreciate you. Drop your fine self on a pet store owner. It’s not my thing, but what do I know?

I’ve got mine. Go get your own! Say, “Outta my way—I’m comin’ through!”

What time have you got? AM Chicago? Don’t look at your watch—the answer’s not there. The answer’s not for you to know.

Is it tomorrow? Tomorrow is promised to no one.

Recognize that You’re Not the Same at Do 101 as You Were at Do 1

When you began following Instant Interviews, you had to beg for a job and take whatever was offered.

Now you know what a job really is, and how to make your own.

So if you’re considering an offer, the only question is, “What am I giving up by not having more instant interviews?”

The answer is, “More opportunities.”

It’s a tough decision, and really comes down to whether you love the gig or need the money.

We’ll get to the Offer Comparison Checklist in a few.

But first . . .

Take at Least One Day to Accept

Asking for a day to sleep on it can be a challenge. But you owe it to yourself to really think all offers through.

It also makes you look just a little more in demand—an important way to position yourself if you start working there.

The day can be used to call any offerors with possible, probable, or pending offers.

I’m going to take you through a dialogue of the most agonizing fact pattern. It’s the phone call with an offer,
