Iran - Andrew Burke [358]
MARK ELLIOTT
Western Iran, Northeastern Iran
Mark has been captivated by Iran’s hospitality since his first visit in 1984. On one early trip he found himself caught up in the middle of a vast ‘Down with America’ demonstration celebrating the anniversary of the storming of the US embassy. Far from being a threatening experience, demonstrators merrily welcomed him along, took him for tea and reminded him that lacking discos, this was the nearest Tehran came to entertainment. Mark is best known as a travel writer and tourism consultant and he specialises in Iran’s neighbour, Azerbaijan, about which he has written several books.

LONELY PLANET AUTHORS
Why is our travel information the best in the world? It’s simple: our authors are independent, dedicated travellers. They don’t research using just the internet or phone, and they don’t take freebies in exchange for positive coverage. They travel widely, to all the popular spots and off the beaten track. They personally visit thousands of hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, galleries, palaces, museums and more – and they take pride in getting all the details right, and telling it how it is. Think you can do it? Find out how at lonelyplanet.com.

THE LONELY PLANET STORY
Fresh from an epic journey across Europe, Asia and Australia in 1972, Tony and Maureen Wheeler sat at their kitchen table stapling together notes. The first Lonely Planet guidebook, Across Asia on the Cheap, was born.
Travellers snapped up the guides. Inspired by their success, the Wheelers began publishing
