support. I would also like to thank the entire Lonely Planet Japan team, particularly Chris, who has overseen this wonderful travel tome through so many editions. Finally, I’d like to acknowledge the cast of characters that make my life in Japan so complete. To Tac, you’re a great roommate and an even better friend, and I know you’re going to enjoy the view at the top of the world. To Will, you’ve got a big heart and a great golf swing, so follow your dreams. To Aki, thank you for sticking with me all these years, and I hope that you find nothing but happiness in life.

TIMOTHY N HORNYAK

I’d like to thank Chris Rowthorn, Matt Firestone and Lonely Planet staff, and my family (especially Alex for joining me on the road) for their patience with my wanderlust and kind support. Heartfelt thanks also go to Izu Islands JETs Tyler Roy, Robert Synovec, Rachel Turner and Michael Holdsworth; the Ide family of Fuji-Kawaguchi; John Washington of Chichi-jima; Burritt Sabin of Yokohama; Mamiko Hokari and Amal Gayed.

BENEDICT WALKER

This work is dedicated to my teachers. To the memory of my father, Tony Walker, my Nanna, Catherine Cook, my guru, Denise Crundall, and my friend Nanayo Kato-Wilder, all now deceased. Each of whom recognised my connection with Japan, encouraged me to explore it, had faith that I would make the right choices, and showed me the magic of following our dreams. My thanks to family and friends and those who helped me on the road; to John Vlahides who showed me I could do this; to Chris Rowthorn and Emily K Wolman; to Bicky, Kaori, Takashi and Purima Shimizu and my friends in Matsumoto; and the beloved gang at Stage and Screen Travel Melbourne. Without your patience, friendship and support, this journey would not have been possible. Thanks to Aunty Bonnie, a wordsmith in the truest sense, who gave me Lonely Planet Japan on my 11th birthday. Finally, all my love and gratitude to my Mum, Patricia Walker, who always believes in me, no matter what I do, or how far away I am.

PAUL WARHAM

Countless people helped me out while I was on the road: by suggesting a little-known local sight, recommending a restaurant or bar, or by pointing me in the right direction when I was lost. Everywhere I went in Shikoku and Western Honshū I met warm smiles and an eagerness to help. In Tokyo, I owe a debt of gratitude to Shimokawa Tokiji, for permitting me to turn his lovely apartment into an unholy mess of leaflets, notebooks, and orange peel. I owe Chris Rowthorn a large, well-chilled jug of juice for the times he bent over backwards, only to have me push him further. Thanks to my parents, for teaching me to keep my eyes open. And thanks as always to Emi, for everything.

WENDY YANAGIHARA

For their continued love and support, I am so thankful to my family: Dad, Jason, and the Maekawa, Takahashi and Yamamoto families. Many thanks also to Kenichi Anazawa, Mariko Matsumura, Meiko Fujimura, Natsuki Shigeta, Mr and Mrs Konishi, Naoya Suzuki, Midori Thiollier and Denis Taillandier for all of your help and good times, and to Mark, for surviving the whole process in such good humour.
