With an occasional exception, I acquired all the quotes in the book firsthand, either in face-to-face interviews, speaking on the telephone, or through informal conversations. I have listed the names of these people alphabetically, and the circumstances of when and where and why, as far as I am able to recall.
Where I refer to conversations by telephone in 1974, these were with the people that John Wayne recommended I talk to. Where I refer to conversations by telephone in 1979, these were for a tribute I wrote for Photoplay which was never published.
John Agar: by telephone (1979).
Claude Akins: for general interview in London (1980).
Richard Attenborough: on the set of Brannigan (1974).
Lauren Bacall: a casual conversation while I was visiting the set of Murder on the Orient Express at Elstree Studios (1973).
Carroll Baker: a general interview (and a game of Battleship!) at her London home during a break in her filming schedule of The World Is Full of Married Men (1979).
Ina Balin: by telephone (1979).
James Lee Barrett: by telephone (1979).
