OUR FAVORITE FLEA MARKETS

Flea markets are like urban archaeology: you’ll need plenty of patience and luck when sifting through other people’s trash and detritus, but oh the thrill when finally unearthing a piece of treasure! We’ve rounded up the best of LA’s many hunting grounds, so arrive early, bring small bills, wear those walking shoes and get ready to haggle.

Rose Bowl Flea Market (Map; Rose Bowl, 1001 Rose Bowl Dr, Pasadena; admission $7-20; 5am-4:30pm 2nd Sun of month) Some vintage junkies think this ginormous flea market is the cat’s pajamas, but we think it’s pretty overpriced and overrated. More than 2200 vendors vie for your dollars, so bring stamina, sunscreen and water. True pros show up at 5am (when admission is $20), flashlight in hand.

Pasadena City College Flea Market (Map; 1570 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena; admission free; 8am-3pm 1st Sun of month) A favorite among thrifty trinket hunters, this monthly market is less overwhelming than the Rose Bowl, with about 450 vendors and a great music section. Proceeds help finance scholarships and student activities.

Melrose Trading Post (Map; 7850 Melrose Ave, Mid-City; admission $2; 9am-5pm Sun; ) Young Hollywood loves snapping up trendy retro threads, jewelry, homewares, art and offbeat stuff proffered at fair prices by about 100 hip purveyors. It’s held in the parking lot of Fairfax High with admission proceeds going towards school programs.

Santa Monica Outdoor Antique & Collectible Market (Map; Airport Ave, off Bundy Ave, Santa Monica; admission 6am-8am $7, 8am-3pm $5; 6am-3pm 4th Sun of month; ) Antique hounds on a mission will find enough Victorian armoires, porcelain chamber pots, antique vases and other stuff to fill an entire village of B&Bs. Quality is generally high, and so are the prices. It’s at the Santa Monica Airport.

Long Beach Outdoor Antique & Collectible Market (Map; Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, Conant St btwn Lakewood Blvd & Clark Ave; admission $5; 6:30am-3pm 3rd Sun of month; ) Bargains abound at this sprawling market with over 800 stalls hawking everything from vintage postcards to pottery, fur to furniture. Near Long Beach Airport.

Kitson (Map; 310-859-2652; 115 N Robertson Blvd, West Hollywood; 10am-7:30pm Mon-Sat, noon-5pm Sun) High-energy tunes keep cover girls flipping fast through up-to-the-second hoodies, purses, shoes and jeans by Victoria Beckham. It’s a routine stop for celebs before or after lunch at the Ivy. Guys should check the goods at Kitson Men (Map; 146 N Robertson Blvd).

Lisa Kline (Map; 888-547-2554; 136 N Robertson Blvd, West Hollywood; 10am-7pm Mon-Sat, 11am-5pm Sun) Lisa Kline was a style-maker on Robertson long it became a fashion runway. She stocks plenty of denim plus all the hot labels you see on Lindsay, Cameron and Jessica (current faves include Project e, Crocs and Splendid Mills) and also does her own line. Women with real curves, alas, will find little selection. Lisa’s growing emporium includes a men’s store (143 S Robertson Blvd), a kids’ store (123 S Robertson Blvd) and another women’s branch (Map; 315 S Beverly Dr, Beverly Hills).

Fred Segal ( 10am-7pm Mon-Sat, noon-6pm Sun) Santa Monica (Map; 310-458-8100; 500 Broadway; ); West Hollywood (Map; 323-655-3734; 8100 Melrose Ave) Celebs and beautiful people circle for the latest from Jet, Jill Stewart and McQ at this warren of high-end boutiques under one impossibly chic but slightly snooty roof. It’s even mentioned in Pink’s 2006 hit Stupid Girl. The only time you’ll see bargains (sort of) is during the two-week blowout sale in September.

DNA Venice (Map; 310-399-0341; 411 Rose Ave; 11am-8pm Mon-Fri, 10am-8pm Sat, 11am-7pm Sun; ) West Hollywood (Map; 323-882-8464; 7519 Sunset Blvd; noon-9pm Mon-Fri, 11am-9pm Sat, 11am-7pm
