Around Palm Springs

Desert Hot Springs is known for small, Palm Springs–style inns with the advantage of being at the hot spring source. Your best bet Down Valley is large resorts catering to golfers and spa-goers; rack rates are pricey, but there are often discounts and package deals.

Miracle Manor (Map; 760-329-6641, 877-329-6641; www.miraclemanor.com; 12589 Reposo Rd, Desert Hot Springs; r from $175; wi-fi) Billed as a retreat, and by gum they’re right. Absence of phones, faxes and children in its six rooms lends itself to sensory deprivation, and organic, insecticide-free cotton sheets help you enjoy the modernist surroundings.

Hope Springs Resort (Map; 760-329-4003; www.hopespringsresort.com; 68075 Club Circle Dr, Desert Hot Springs; r from $195; ) This modernist mecca put Desert Hot Springs on the map for stylish stays, and it continues to dazzle with 10 rooms featuring impeccable period furniture, artful public spaces, fantastic views and natural hot springs flowing through three pools.

Sagewater Spa (Map; 760-220-1554; www.sagewaterspa.com; 12689 Elisio Rd, Desert Hot Springs; r from $195-250; ) It’s minimalist to the max at this seven-room, adults-only inn with two spa pools (warm and warmer), on a hillside with views across the valley. Rooms have concrete floors and a white-on-white color scheme inflected with the occasional – wait for it – sage accent. Homemade coffee cake.

Miramonte Resort (Map; 760-341-2200, 800-237-2926; www.miramonteresort.com; 40-500 Indian Wells Ln, Indian Wells; r from $229; ) Even if the publicity overplays the Tuscan theme of this resort, it’s a great stay, not least for its spa, the Well. Lots of nooks and crannies give you leisure to kick back and enjoy the views of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

La Quinta Resort & Club (Map; 760-564-4111, 800-598-3828; www.laquintaresort.com; 49499 Eisenhower Dr, La Quinta; r $229-439; ) Opened in 1926, the sprawling La Quinta has a Spanish Colonial–style lobby, cushy ultraprivate bungalows, spectacular grounds, 41 pools, 53 hot tubs and 90 holes of golf.

Westin Mission Hills (Map; 760-328-5955, 800-937-8461; 71333 Dinah Shore Dr, Rancho Mirage; r from $295; ) Classic Down Valley golf resort with two courses, numerous pools, tennis courts, an enormous spa and desert tones in its guest rooms (all with private balcony). Pet-friendly.
