THANKS
ANDREA SCHULTE-PEEVERS
Lots of good folks to thank on this one, including Kim Cooper and Richard Schave for telling me about even wackier places than even I knew, Carol Martinez for letting me hobnob at the Daytime Emmies, Bob Maguglin and Megan Rodriguez for reacquainting me with Long Beach, and Kenny G for showing me a side of Hollywood nightlife. A big round of applause also to my brilliant coauthors Amy Balfour and Andy Bender, to my superpatient and understanding editors Suki Gear and Averil Robertson and to Corey Hutchison for making some fantastic maps. And David, as always, I couldn’t do life without you.

LONELY PLANET: TRAVEL WIDELY, TREAD LIGHTLY, GIVE SUSTAINABLY
The Lonely Planet Story
The story begins with a classic travel adventure: Tony and Maureen Wheeler’s 1972 journey across Europe and Asia to Australia. There was no useful information about the overland trail then, so Tony and Maureen published the first Lonely Planet guidebook to meet a growing need.
From a kitchen table, Lonely Planet has grown to become the largest independent travel publisher in the world, with offices in Melbourne (Australia), Oakland (USA) and London (UK). Today Lonely Planet guidebooks cover the globe. There is an ever-growing list of books and information in a variety of media. Some things haven’t changed. The main aim is still to make it possible for adventurous individuals to get out there – to explore and better understand the world.

AMY C BALFOUR
I’d like to thank the Academy…oh wait, I mean, I’d like to thank Suki Gear for entrusting me with another awesome assignment and for kindly not mocking my thrift store neuroses. Big thanks to coordinating author Andrea Schulte-Peevers for her guidance, enthusiasm, and great cookouts with husband David. Thanks also to co-author Andy Bender for first giving me the Lonely Planet scoop. I also had the best OC and Santa Barbara guides ever – thanks to Allan, Megan, Mike, Eli, David, and Kelly. And a tip of the wineglass to my favorite road-tripping Memphis mama, Melissa, who’s always up for an adventure and game of slots. If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. And of course, the Apocalypse Gang for suffering through all my boring stories with nothing but love and encouragement.
ANDREW BENDER
