best that none of us know for certain.” “Yeah,” said Geordi. “The Konor are a perfect example of what people do when they think they have all the answers.” “But if there is a God, a Providence, driving the universe,” Data pursued, “why would it want us to live with such uncertainty?” “To keep us humble,” Pulaski asserted. “Data, do you know a saying that goes, “If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts’?” Data automatically accessed the rest: was “But if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.” Francis Bacon, of Ancient Earth. A blinking diode caught her eye, and she raised a paw to pat at it. “Hey-not so fast!”

Geordi said, picking her up. “Here, Data-hang on to this creature till we get you squared away.” Data placed the cat on the couch between his neck and shoulder, holding her lightly while he petted her. She didn’t struggle, but settled down against him, and- “Listen!” Data said, leaning his ear against the cat’s soft fur. “What is it?”

Pulaski asked, turning to face him as Geordi ran the instrument along the opening to seal his synthoskin. “It is Mystery,” he said in wonder.

“She is purring.”
