Mugglenet.com's Harry Potter Should Have Died - Emerson Spartz [58]

Are the adult fans just victims of arrested development, or are the children who read them precocious beyond their years? Verdict: This one is a draw—Jo struck a happy balance. The books are written for adults, children, and any human on the planet who can read.

If you could go back in time and talk J.K. Rowling into changing something in the books, what would you change?

Show the Courtship of Lily and James

If Lily thought that James was an “arrogant bullying toe-rag” for most of her time at Hogwarts, then what made her change her mind [OotP, p. 647]? How did James charm her and win her love? Was it just good looks and money, plus the fact that they were both cool kids in Gryffindor? We know they got married and had baby Harry, but beyond that their relationship is rather mysterious. A few added scenes from a diary or some love letters could easily fix that. How did James prove he was no longer a bully? Did he really change or did he lie to her? Where did they go on that first date? Did Sirius think it would work out? Surely there was no love potion involved—or maybe there was? Enquiring minds want to know.

Let Harry and Snape Work Out Their Problems

The Snape fans of the world hoped beyond hope that he and Harry would have a big emotional confrontation to work out their problems. Fans thought J.K.R. was hinting at this when she made the statement after HBP that: “Harry-Snape is now as personal, if not more so, than Harry-Voldemort” [JKR-MN]. Harry and Snape were like fire and gasoline, and readers wanted to see that interaction again, but maybe with more honesty on both sides. Snape might have learned he could trust Harry, and, in return, Harry could have grown up and seen why Dumbledore’s trust wasn’t misplaced in Snape.

It would have been difficult for Snape to blurt out that he always loved Lily Potter, and that’s probably why J.K.R. chose to do it in a memory in DH instead. But if Snape and Harry had talked it out, they still could have used the Pensieve for the memories to make it easier for Harry to believe the truth. And after Harry got over the shock, he might finally have accepted that Snape had a heart.

It would just be so satisfying and brutally honest, and it would be much better than Snape’s death scene, when Harry is numb and emotionless, and basically sees the death through the cruel eyes of Voldemort. The mind connection with Voldemort might have ruled out a heart-to-heart talk, but this is a magical story and Voldie was distracted for most of DH. Anything could have been possible if J.K.R. had wanted to write it that way. If only Harry had used a Shield Charm on Snape just before the snake got him in the throat, they might have worked out their bad karma and admitted to each other for once that they are on the same side. It would have been a good lesson for the younger readers, too, if both Harry and Snape could have admitted their mistakes and learned to work together in spite of their differences. That sort of resolution is missing throughout the books, and here was a chance for real unification of the houses of Hogwarts, with Snape as a Slytherin and Harry a Gryffindor. They were always on the same side, but it would have been great to hear them admit it and hug it out. Or, um, at least talk.

Verdict

What do the fans want J.K.R. to add to the books? A big shout-fest of truth between Snape and Harry? Or a scene of sweet young love between Hogwarts hot-ties James Potter and Lily Evans? Watching a Harry/Snape cuddle session would be fun, but we’re suckers for learning about the Potters’ past. Verdict: What exactly did Lily see in James? Jo, we must know!

Should Harry Potter be included with the classics of literature?

No

Only time will tell which books are “classics,” and the Harry Potter books have not been around long enough to earn a place on that list. Sure, they have been popular with modern readers for quite a few years, but the series is over now and recently, the books have been knocked from the bestseller list. With no new material from the Potterverse
