REALITY-CHECK MOMENT—I JUST CAN’T DO THIS ALONE!
You can have all the talent, all the amazing ideas in the world, but if you don’t know the right people, nothing happens. Doing it alone is always more difficult. That’s why building a network of people who support you and your Future Picture—whether your next step involves finding a date, a job, a gym, or an apartment—makes your journey much easier. Many twentysomethings mistakenly believe that building a powerful network from scratch requires going out and boldly meeting as many different people as they can. Sure, if you’re a politician in the middle of a close election that may be a good game plan; but for where you’re going, the quality of people in your network is much more important than the quantity.
To add quality people to your network, do what the most savvy power brokers do: Fine-tune the signals that you constantly send and receive so you attract the people you want. You can adjust your signals to always draw a response from people that moves you closer to your four snapshots. Think about it this way: Every quality person you add to your network brings with him his entire network. With the right people in your network you can get through to pretty much anyone imaginable.
Once you have mastered how to send and receive signals, you can then get through to virtually anyone whenever and wherever. This skill will come in handy whether you’re eating french fries at McDonald’s and see a hot guy you want to meet or sampling some fancy $10 appetizer at the Four Seasons and see a movie star you want to meet.

Where I live, in Austin, Texas, the Four Seasons Hotel is definitely the after-work hangout for the city’s elite, elite hopefuls, and elite posers. This is networking central. Each weekday at about 5:30 P.M. the small tables in the rustic Lobby Lounge fill with wealthy hotel guests, celebrities, high-profile politicians, big-time dealmakers, and other assorted characters. I was twenty-one the first time I had a meeting in the Lounge.
I remember sitting in an oversize brown leather chair facing in the direction of a sharply dressed gentleman who had a loud laugh. He was at a table on the other side of the Lounge strategically facing the entrance. It was hard to miss the small sign prominently positioned on his table, which read “Reserved.” His neat gray hair matched his understated but clearly expensive suit. I remember him because the group at my table was so entertained by his behavior. Whenever a person walked into the Lounge and looked around is if he or she were lost, the man would stand up and greet that person with a friendly hello. Then he would graciously offer him or her a seat at his table.
Most of the time those people politely declined in confusion; but by the end of my two-hour meeting, the gentleman had made friends with at least twenty complete strangers! This was even more
