REALITY-CHECK MOMENT—
BASED ON MY PAST, I JUST DON’T SEE HOW I CAN BE SUCCESSFUL.
So far we’ve talked a lot about where you want to go with your life and how to achieve your Future Picture. But it’s also important to acknowledge and learn from where you’ve already been, so you can free yourself from any limitations of the past and reach boldly for what’s possible.
We all have a past. This string of memories connects where we have been to where we are now. Ugly or pretty, everything you have experienced in the past has contributed to who you are now and what you are capable of achieving. In some cases, your memories can hold you back and cause you to be fearful and insecure. Left to run free in your imagination, your past can make you hesitant to dream big and live life to its fullest, sometimes because you have some painful memories you don’t want to revisit. No matter how frightening events in your past may seem, it’s all in your past—not your future. What you do from now on is your future.
Lindsay’s past was so traumatic it almost did ruin her future. Until one fateful August moment, she was living a dream life. She graduated high school as captain of the cheerleading squad and number five academically in her class; she was voted by her classmates as most likely to succeed. To top it all off, she won Miss Teen America—dressed as a dancing broccoli for the talent competition!
In college, Lindsay had the time of her life. She lived with five of her closest friends. She was accepted into her dream sorority, Pi Phi. She earned a place in her college’s exclusive Business Honors Program. The youngest child in a well-to-do family, Lindsay was a quick-witted beauty queen who had it all.
Until the jog. It was the day after her nineteenth birthday. To keep the “freshman fifteen” off, Lindsay left her apartment that afternoon to run at the city park down the street. Lindsay always wore headphones when she jogged. She loved to lose herself in her favorite music. This was a particularly happy day for her, because her mom and her boyfriend were in town to celebrate her birthday. They were all looking forward to a fun-filled celebratory dinner that evening.
It was August 14, 2000. As Lindsay neared the end of her jog, a stranger grabbed her from behind. He pressed a serrated knife against her throat and dragged her to a patch of overgrown grass in the middle of several dense trees. She pleaded for her life, but he didn’t care. He ripped away her clothes and viciously stole her innocence.
