One of the famed Carl Kiekhaefer–owned Chryslers is loaded into the truck after a crash earlier in the day. The covered transporter truck was unusual for its time and a sign of the level of expense and professionalism Kiekhaefer invested during his brief time in the sport.
Michael Waltrip’s battered Toyota (center) is loaded into the transporter, while the Ford Fusions of Erik Darnell (left) and Paul Menard do the same. The sun appears to be beginning its slow descent toward the horizon at Phoenix International Raceway. A long drive to team headquarters in North Carolina lies ahead.
