9E ARRONDISSEMENT (OPÉRA)

Hôtel Amour.

$$ | The hipster team behind this designer boutique hotel just off the trendy Rue des Martyrs already counts among its fiefdoms some of the hottest hotels, bars, and nightclubs in Paris. But despite the cool factor and the funky rooms individually decorated by Parisian avant-garde artists, the prices remain democratically bohemian. Of course, there are few amenities, but there is a 24-hour retro brasserie and garden terrace in the back where locals come to hang out in warmer weather. It’s best to take the kids elsewhere; vintage nudie magazines decorate, and the sex shops of Pigalle are blocks away. Pros: hip clientele and locals at the brasserie; close to Montmartre; garden dining in summer. Cons: few amenities; a few blocks from the nearest métro; close to red-light district. | 8 rue Navarin, Montmartre | 75009 | 01–48–78–31–80 | www.hotelamour.com | 20 rooms | In-room: no a/c, no phone, no TV. In-hotel: restaurant, room service, bar, laundry service, Wi-Fi, some pets allowed | AE, DC, MC, V | Station: Pigalle

Hôtel Chopin.

$ | The Chopin recalls its 1846 birth date with a creaky-floored lobby and aged woodwork. The basic but comfortable rooms overlook the Passage Jouffroy’s quaint toy shops and bookstores or the rooftops of Paris, but none face the busy nearby streets. The best rooms end in “7” (No. 407 overlooks the Grévin Wax Museum’s ateliers), whereas those ending in “2” tend to be darkest and smallest (but cheapest). Pros: unique location; close to major métro station; great nightlife district. Cons: neighborhood can be noisy; some rooms are dark and cramped; few amenities. | 10 bd. Montmartre, 46 passage Jouffroy, Opéra/Grands Boulevards | 75009 | 01–47–70–58–10 | www.hotelchopin.com | 36 rooms | In-room: no a/c, safe | AE, MC, V | Station: Grands Boulevards.

Hôtel George Sand.

$$$ | This family-run boutique hotel where the 19th-century writer George Sand once lived is fresh and modern, while preserving some original architectural details. Rooms have tea/coffee-making trays and high-tech comforts such as complimentary high-speed Internet and cordless phones. Bathrooms are decked out in yacht-inspired wood flooring, with Etro toiletries. Pros: next door to two department stores; historic atmosphere; free Internet. Cons: noisy street; some rooms are quite small. | 26 ruedes Mathurins | 75009 | 01–47–42–63–47 | www.hotelgeorgesand.com | 20 rooms | In-room: a/c, safe, Internet, Wi-Fi. In-hotel: room service, laundry service | AE, MC, V | Station: Havre Caumartin

Fodor’s Choice | Hôtel Langlois.

$$ | After starring in The Truth About Charlie (a remake of Charade), this darling hotel gained a reputation as one of the most atmospheric budget sleeps in the city. Rates have crept up, but the former circa-1870 bank retains its beautiful wood-panel reception area and wrought-iron elevator. The individually decorated and spacious rooms are decked out with original glazed-tile fireplaces and period art. Some rooms, such as Nos. 15, 21, and 41, have enormous retro bathrooms. Street-facing rooms can be noisy, but the top-floor views over the rooftops make up for it. Pros: excellent views from the top floor; close to department stores and Opéra Garnier; historic decor. Cons: noisy street; off the beaten path; some sagging furniture. | 63 rue St-Lazare, Opéra/Grands Boulevards | 75009 | 01–48–74–78–24 | www.hotel-langlois.com | 24 rooms, 3 suites | In-room: a/c, Wi-Fi. In-hotel: Internet terminal, some pets allowed | AE, MC, V | Station: Trinité

Hôtel Royal Fromentin.

$$ | At the border of Montmartre’s now tamed
