Landmines

A half century of armed conflict over the Cordillera del Condor region on Peru’s northeastern border with Ecuador was finally resolved in 1998. However, unexploded ordinance (UXO) in the area has not been completely cleaned up. Only use official border crossings and don’t stray from the beaten path when traveling in this region.

EMBASSIES & CONSULATES

Most foreign embassies are in Lima, with some consular services in major tourist centers such as Cuzco (Click here).

It is important to realize what your embassy can and can’t do if you get into trouble in Peru. Generally speaking, it won’t be much help if the trouble you’re in is even remotely your own fault. Your embassy will not be sympathetic if you end up in jail after committing a crime locally, even if such actions are legal in your own country. In genuine emergencies, you might get some assistance, but only if other channels have been exhausted. If you need to get home urgently, a free ticket is exceedingly unlikely – the embassy would expect you to have travel insurance (Click here). If all your money and documents are stolen, they will assist you with getting a new passport, but a loan for onward travel is out of the question.

It pays to call in advance to double-check operating hours or schedule an appointment. While many consulates and embassies are staffed during regular business hours, attention to the public is often more limited. Public operating hours are listed below. For after-hours and emergency contact numbers, check individual websites.
