accommodations in San Isidro are unapologetically upscale, though there are a few other options tucked away among the treelined streets.

Malka Youth Hostel (Map; 222-5589; www.youthhostelperu.com; Los Lirios 165; dm S25, s & d without bathroom S60, s & d S70; ) Near the transit hub of Av Arequipa and Av Javier Prado, and just a block from a small park, this wonderful 10-room hostel, run by an amiable mother-daughter team, has clean rooms that sleep three to eight people, in addition to a couple of private rooms. There is a large shared kitchen and laundry facilities, a TV room with DVD player, luggage storage, free wi-fi and a small on-site cafe that serves light meals. There is even a small rock-climbing wall in the well-manicured garden.

Casa Bella Perú (Map; 421-7354; www.casabellaperu.net; Las Flores 459; s/d/tr/q with breakfast US$59/65/79/89; ) A great midrange option in a relentlessly expensive area, this expansive former 1950s home has contemporary rooms accented by indigenous textiles. Fourteen varied units have comfy beds, firm pillows, cable TV and remodeled bathrooms. There is a kitchen, an ample garden and a lounge, and services such as wi-fi are available for an extra fee. DUO Hotel Boutique (Map; 628-3245; www.duohotelperu.com; Valle Riesta 576; s S288, d S352-384, ste S416, all with breakfast; ) On a serene, residential street, two blocks west of the Lima Golf Club, this intimate new boutique hotel offers top-of-the-line amenities. Twenty elegant, monochromatic rooms are outfitted with marble baths, minibars, flat-screen TVs and slippers, while the public areas are chicly decorated in a contemporary-meets-pre-Columbian style. An on-site restaurant, overseen by Chef Javier Paredes, produces delectable fusion specialties that marry the best of Peruvian and Italian flavors. Credit cards accepted; excellent value.

Hotel Basadre Suites (Map; 442-2423; www.hotelbasadre.com; Av Jorge Basadre 1310; s/d with breakfast S410/460, extra bed S77; ) Built around what was once a private home, this attentive inn has 20 simple rooms of various sizes and configurations, decorated in shades of forest green and bronze. Each unit has a minibar, hair-dryer, cable TV and lock-box – and the included breakfast, served in a small room by the garden, is abundant. Suites Antique (Map; 222-1094; www.suites-antique.com; Av 2 de Mayo 954; s/d with breakfast US$100/115; ) A low-key spot with puffy couches and brightly colored walls. The 23 spotless suites are very spacious and come with small kitchenettes equipped with microwave ovens and a minifridge. Breakfast is served at the cozy in-house cafe.

Country Club Lima Hotel (Map; 611-9000; www.hotelcountry.com; Los Eucaliptos 590; d from US$200; ) Built in 1927, this regal hotel is housed in one of Lima’s finest buildings, a sprawling Spanish-style structure with wood-beam ceilings that is clad in colorful tile and dotted with replica Cuzco School paintings. The lovely lobby cafe, where breakfast is served, is covered by a stained-glass dome. The 83 rooms – chock-full of amenities – range from the simply luxurious Master Room to the downright opulent Presidential Suite. Credit cards accepted.

Delfines Hotel y Casino (Map; 215-7000; www.losdelfineshotel.com; Los Eucaliptos 555; d with breakfast from US$200; ) This tall glass tower overlooking the golf course, with 206 spacious, elegant rooms and suites decorated in warm earth tones, is one of the top spots in town, having accommodated all manner of VIPs, from Julio Iglesias to Kiss. There’s a gym, a spa, a salon and a business center. The Delphos Café, the on-site restaurant, serves sumptuous seafood meals within view of a tank that houses two frolicking bottlenose dolphins. Overlooking the ocean, this neighborhood’s pedestrian-friendly streets teem with cafes, restaurants, hotels, high-rises, banks, shops and nightclubs that pump everything from disco to cumbia (Colombian salsa-like dance and musical style).
