Peru - Lonely Planet Publications [83]

By Root 1027 0
one of the mellowest haunts in Barranco. Decorated with a lifetime’s worth of theater posters, this is where the writerly set arrives to swig chilcano de pisco and deconstruct the state of humanity. There’s no sign; look for the crowded room lined with wine bottles.

La Posada del Mirador (Map; 256-1796; Ermita 104; 5pm-midnight) A low-key, 2nd-story drinking establishment, the clifftop Posada del Mirador has outdoor tables great for catching the sunset.

Acantilado de Barranco (Map; 247-2145; www.acantiladodebarranco.com; Ermita 102; 6pm-midnight) Sharing the same good views next door to La Posada del Mirador is this more formal place, where you can still find 1950s cocktails like the Rusty Nail on the menu.

Wahio’s (Map; 477-4110; Plaza Espinosa; Thu-Sat) A large and lively bar with a fair share of dreadlocks and a classic soundtrack of reggae, ska and dub.

ENTERTAINMENT

Cinemas, theaters, traveling art exhibits and concerts are covered in the daily El Comercio, with the most detailed listings found in Monday’s ‘Luces’ section. Likewise, you can log on to the informational portal Living in Peru (www.livinginperu.com), which maintains an up-to-date calendar of events. More youth oriented is Oveja Negra (www.revistaovejanegra.com), a pocket-sized directory distributed free at restaurants and bars which provides monthly listings of cultural and nightlife happenings.

To purchase tickets for events, see boxed text, below.

Live Music

Many restaurants and bars feature small local acts, while bigger bands tend to play at the casinos or sporting arenas. The following venues are the best-known live-music spots.

PEñAS

Peruvian folk music and dance is performed on weekends at peñas. There are two main types of Peruvian music performed at these venues: folklórica and criollo. The first is more typical of the Andean highlands; the other, a coastal music driven by African-influenced beats. Admission varies; dinner is sometimes included in the price.

Las Brisas del Titicaca (Map; 715-6960; www.brisasdeltiticaca.com; Wakuski 168, Central Lima; admission S21-48) The best folklórica show in Lima is at this peña near Plaza Bolognesi in downtown.

La Candelaria (Map; 247-1314; www.lacandelariaperu.com; Bolognesi 292, Barranco; admission S31-53) In Barranco, a show that incorporates both folklórica and criollo music and dancing.

De Rompe y Raja (Map; 247-3271; www.derompeyraja.pe; Manuel Segura 127, Barranco; admission S31) Near La Candelaria, a reader-recommended criollo performance space.

Nightclubs

The club scene gets started well after midnight and keeps going until the break of dawn. Barranco and Miraflores are the best neighborhoods to go clubbing, but spots come and go, so ask around before heading out. Music styles and cover charges vary depending on the night of the week.
