Hurley (TNG’s “Hide and Q” and “Q Who”); Heather Jarman (the novel String Theory: Evolution); David Mack (the novels A Time to Kill and A Time to Heal); Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin (the novels Taking Wing and The Red King); Ronald D. Moore (TNG’s “Tapestry” and “All Good Things…”); Terri Osborne (the short story “‘Q’uandary” in No Limits); Michael Piller (Voyager’s “Death Wish”); Shawn Piller (Voyager’s “Death Wish” and “The Q and the Grey”); Gene Roddenberry (TNG’s “Encounter at Farpoint” and “Hide and Q”); Hannah Louise Shearer and Robert Hewitt Wolfe (DS9’s “Q-Less”); John Vornholt (the novels A Time to Be Born and A Time to Die); and Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore (the novels A Time to Sow and A Time to Harvest). I also made use of my own material from Diplomatic Implausibility; Demons of Air and Darkness; The Brave and the Bold; A Time for War, A Time for Peace; Articles of the Federation; and the I. K. S. Gorkon series. The aforementioned Terri Osborne also deserves thanks for coming up with the title for this book, thus providing me with my shortest book title to date. Fitting, since my previous TNG book had my longest title….

Various reference sources: The Star Trek Encyclopedia by Michael and Denise Okuda, with Debbie Mirek; Star Charts by Geoffrey Mandel; Larry Nemecek’s Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion; and the fantastic (and ever-growing) websites Memory Alpha (www.memory-alpha.org) and the Non-Canon Star Trek Wiki (startrek.wikia.com). Also thanks to Infinite Viking for anecdotal assistance, and www.panchobarnes.com for info on the original Happy Bottom Riding Club.

The usual gangs of idiots: my glorious writers group, CGAG; the Forebearance, in particular The Mom; the other folks at Pocket, Marco Palmieri, Ed Schlesinger, Jen Heddle, and Jaime Cerota; my fellow band members in the Boogie Knights (www.boogie-knights.org), for giving me a much-needed musical outlet; the folks at the cafe, who provided me with an endless supply of iced coffee and bagels while I worked; and the various folks on the assorted Star Trek Literature bulletin boards on the internet: the Trek BBS (www.trekbbs.com), Psi Phi (www.psiphi.org), Book Trek (www.booktrek.tk), and, of course, Pocket Books’ own board (www. startrekbooks.com) and the official Star Trek site (www.startrek.com).

Finally, them that live with me, both human and feline, who provide me with joy and wonderfulness.

It’s been twenty years. Ironically, it was on the occasion of Star Trek’s twentieth anniversary that Paramount announced it would be launching a new TV show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, the following year. Now, twenty years after that show, the franchise continues to plug away. TNG spawned three spinoffs, and the number of movies has more than doubled. It’s been a fantastic journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help celebrate it.

So here’s to twenty more years. And twenty years after that. And so on.
