It is suspected that some of these may actually exist in the hands of consumers, although studies have been inconclusive. The Myth of Sisyphus was first published in 1942; The Plague, in 1947; The Rebel, in 1951. Camus was born in Algeria and was thus a French citizen, he moved to Paris just before World War Two. The fact that he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1957 doesn’t take anything away from the force of his ideas and the vividness of his novels.

At a party thrown in Saint-Germain-des-Prés during the late 1940s, after Merleau-Ponty had published a book about Communism, Camus took him aside and started to yell at him. Merleau-Ponty was friends with many Communists; Camus was very much an anti-Communist. Apparently Merleau-Ponty tried to argue back calmly, but they appeared almost to come to blows. Sartre separated them and Camus headed home. Neither ever really discussed the other in their books or articles; Camus saw himself as a writer (and made his living that way), Merleau-Ponty, as a philosopher (he was a sort of official philosopher of France from 1952 on, when he was appointed to teach at the Collège de France). Camus died in 1960, in a car crash, at 47; Merleau-Ponty died in 1961, at 53.

Merleau-Ponty develops this idea in The Adventures of the Dialectic. He wasn’t talking about music at all; but then again, he wrote in 1955 and he only liked classical music—and not even the weird kind.
