Skinny Bitch_ Ultimate Everyday Cookbook - Kim Barnouin [37]
GLASS PIE PLATE
If you enjoy baking pies, this is a great investment. Because of its transparency, you can see the pie’s progress as it bakes, and it doesn’t absorb odors, flavors, or stains. It is also safe for the oven, microwave, freezer, or dishwasher. Pyrex is the most trusted name in glass cookware, but you can find these babies at grocery stores and any cooking retailer. I have the most kick-ass recipe for apple pie later in this cookbook (courtesy of my mother) so consider this purchase sooner than later.
QUICK TIP: WHEN USING A GLASS PIE PLATE, ADJUST THE OVEN TEMPERATURE TWENTY-FIVE DEGREES LOWER THAN WHAT THE RECIPE CALLS FOR. THIS WAY IT WON’T OVERCOOK THE BOTTOM OF THE PIE WHILE THE TOP BROWNS.
VEGETABLE STEAMER
A food steamer is a great addition to a healthy, low-calorie diet. Because it uses steam rather than boiling water to cook vegetables and fruits, it preserves the vitamins and minerals, and reduces fat intake. Steamers also don’t hotbox the kitchen like an oven and require less energy to operate. They usually come as a steamer pot, bamboo steamer, three-tiered plug-in food steamer, stainless-steel insert that fits into a saucepan, or a small steamer with feet. The cook has many options here.
VITA-MIX
This incredible kitchen appliance turns whole foods into juice, cooks up soup from scratch, grinds grain, whips up peanut butter and can even make homemade ice cream! It is another one that is rather pricey, but the lovers of this wonder appliance have found countless ways (more than fifty) to use and abuse it. I don’t actually own one yet, but have been advertising it at the top of my cooking wish list on the fridge for ages. Any day now, hubby. . . .

Shuck the corn off the cob for a healthy omelet that surprisingly tastes just like a traditional egg-based frittata. This is a fun breakfast for a Saturday morning when you have some extra time to play in the kitchen. Once you get it down pat, change up the recipe and toss in a piecrust for a tasty quiche.
