There is no emotion; there is peace.

There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.

There is no passion; there is serenity.

There is no death; there is the Force.

He had tried his utmost to adhere to these tenets, to make them the guideposts of his life. To be the best Jedi he could be. Toward this, he had disavowed any desire to know anything about his origins or his parents. They had renounced him, after all; given him to the Jedi. He, in turn, had smothered within himself any wish to learn who they had been, what they had been.

But to deny their memories was to deny himself. Jax could see that clearly now. Though the Jedi had shaped him and forged him, the raw material had been provided by Lorn and Siena Pavan.

Below them, the endless sprawl of the planetary city was coming to life. Traffic strata were beginning to build; towers, cloudcutters, and skytowers sparkled with light, and millions upon millions of beings, each and every one their own private cosmos, began their daily routines. The vast majority of those beings were respectable and honest. But deeper down, in the dark crevasses and rifts, those who were neither plied their trades as well.

Someone had to aid the ones who suffered. Someone had to find the ones who were lost. Someone had to stand and fight, for those who could not defend themselves.

Could a Jedi’s work ever have been more clear?

Jax looked up. A golden gleam on the horizon; the Far Ranger was racing toward the dawn.

I-Five said, “Your father didn’t think of himself as a great man. Yet when the situation arose in which he had to step up, he did. I wish I could tell you he succeeded. It was a cruel and callous fate that made a mockery of his mission. But he tried. That’s all, really, in the final analysis, that counts.”

Jax stared at the coming dawn. “Tell me about my father,” he said.
