p. 295. For those of you who worry that Locke is putting reason above God, Locke goes on to clarify: “I do not mean that we must consult reason and examine whether a proposition revealed from God can be made out by natural principles, and if it cannot, that then we may reject it; but consult it we must and by it examine whether it be a revelation from God or no; and if reason finds it to be revealed from God, reason then declares for it as much as for any other truth, and makes it one of her dictates” (p. 295). Locke was pointing out that reason was needed to make sure the revelation did not come from some other source—like the Devil or yourself.

Actually this question was never really asked by medieval philosophers—another misconception. That’s just the kind of question they are accused of asking too often. But, truth be told, they talked about a lot of important stuff too.

21

Actually, this may be a bit too strong. As Malcolm Gladwell points out in Blink, when it comes to recognizing danger and “reading people” our gut may be more reliable than reason. (Back Bay Books, 2007). But this doesn’t defend the Colbertian gut-thinker, since he gut thinks about politics and philosophy, not danger and body language.
