The former shipyards and much of the heavy industry (including Volvo) are on the northern island of Hisingen. Hisingen is reached by road via the monumental bridge Älvsborgsbron, southwest of the city; by Götaälvbron, north of Centralstationen; and by the E6 motorway tunnel, Tingstadstunneln, northeast of the city centre.
The E6 motorway, just east of the city centre, connects Oslo and Malmö.
