Temptation - Brenda Jackson [37]

would have died a quick death on his lips as soon as he’d made it. And the one thing his Aunt Clarisse had taught him not to do was lie. She’d always said lies could come back to haunt you. They would catch up with you at the worst possible time. And he had believed her.

He moved from around the back of the truck. “Ready to go?”

He could tell she wasn’t ready. But she widened her smile a little and said, “Yes. Let me get Sunnie into her seat.”

He watched as she strapped the baby in her car seat, again paying attention to every little detail of Sunnie’s security and comfort. He stepped back as she closed the door, and then he opened the passenger door for her and watched how easily she slid in across the leather. Nice, he thought. Especially when he caught a glimpse of bare thigh. He’d never given a thought to how much he appreciated seeing a woman in a skirt until now.

He got into the truck, backed out her yard and was halfway down the road when she glanced over at him. “I want to use one of your guest rooms, Zeke.”

“All right.”

Zeke kept looking straight ahead, knowing she had glanced over at him, trying to decipher the quickness of his answer. She would discover soon enough that physical attraction was a very powerful thing. And now that they’d experienced just how things could be between them, it wouldn’t be that easy to give it up. And it just so happened that his bedroom was right across the hall from the guest room he intended to put her in.

“I can make a pit stop and grab something to eat. What would you like?” he asked her.

“Oh, anything. I’m not that hungry.”

He looked over at her when he brought the car to a stop at a traffic light. “Maybe not now, but you’ll probably be hungry later.”

And he didn’t add that she should eat something to keep her strength for the plans he had for her after she put the baby to bed for the night. He felt a deep stirring inside him. There was something about her scent that made him want to mate. And mate they would again. His peace of mind and everything male within him was depending on it. He couldn’t wait for night to come.

But for now he would pretend to go along with anything she thought she wanted, and making sure by the time it was over she’d be truly and thoroughly convinced what she wanted was him. Usually, when it came to women, he didn’t like playing games. He liked to be honest, but he didn’t consider what he was doing as playing a game. What he was doing was trying to keep his sanity. He honestly didn’t think she knew just how luscious she was. Maybe he hadn’t shown her enough last night. Evidently he needed to give her several more hints. And he would do so gladly. He shifted in his seat when he felt tightness in the crotch of his pants while thinking how such a thing would be accomplished.

“You don’t mind if I pull into that chicken place, do you?” he asked, gesturing to a KFC.

“No, I guess you’re a growing boy and have to eat sometime,” she said, smiling over at him.

Growing boy was right, and there was no need to tell her what part of him seemed to be outgrowing all the others at the moment.

Sheila glanced around the bedroom she was given. Zeke had set up Sunnie’s bed in a connecting room. She loved his home. It looked like the perfect place for a family.

She pulled a romance novel out of her bag before sliding into bed. When they arrived here, she had helped him get everything inside. After that was done they had both sat down to enjoy the fried-chicken lunch he’d purchased. After that was done he had gone outside to check on things. The fierce winds had knocked down several branches and Zeke and his men had taken the time to clean up the debris. While he was outside, Sheila and Sunnie had made themselves at home.

So far he had been the perfect gentleman and had even volunteered to watch the baby while she had taken a shower. Sunnie had gotten used to seeing him and didn’t cry when he held her. In fact, it seemed that she was giving him as many smiles as she was giving to her.

Now Sunnie was down for the night and it had started raining again. Sheila
