Temptation - Brenda Jackson [50]

and she hesitated and just stared at him, not sure what he wanted her to do. He smiled and asked, “You can ride a horse, right?”

She nodded slowly. “Yes, of course.”

“Then ride me.”

She smiled as she lifted the lower part of her body and then came down on him. He entered her with accurate precision. She stifled a groan as he lifted his hips off the bed to go deeper inside her. She in turned pressed down as hard as she could, grinding her body against his.

And then she did what he told her to do. She rode him.

Brad glanced across the desk at Zeke. “Is there a reason you ran off yesterday like something was on fire?”

Zeke leaned back in his chair. He had left Sheila’s house this morning later than he’d planned, knowing he had to go home first to change before heading into the office. He wasn’t surprised to find Brad waiting on him. He’d seen the newspaper that morning. Brad’s genetic connection to Sunnie made headline news, front page and center, for all to read.

When Zeke had stopped by the Royal Diner to grab a cup of coffee, the place where all the town gossips hung out, it seemed the place was all abuzz. There must have been a leak of information either at the lab where the test was processed or at the hospital. In any case, news of the results of the paternity test was all over town.

Everyone was shocked at the outcome of the test. Those who thought the baby wasn’t Brad’s due to the blackmailers hitting on other TCC members—even that news had somehow leaked—were going around scratching their heads, trying to figure out how the baby could be connected to Brad.

“It had to do with Sheila,” he finally said.

Brad lifted a brow. “The woman taking care of the baby?”

“Yes.”

Brad didn’t say anything as he studied him, and Zeke knew exactly what he was doing. He was reading him like a book, and Zeke knew his best friend had the ability to do that. “And why do I get the feeling this Sheila Hopkins means something more to you than just a case you’re working on?” Brad finally asked.

“Probably because you know me too well, and you’re right. I met her less than two weeks ago and she has gotten to me, Brad. I think…I’ve fallen in love with her.”

Zeke was certain Brad would have toppled over in his chair if it had not been firmly planted on the floor. “Love?”

“Yes, and I know what you’re thinking. And it’s not that. I care for her deeply.” He leaned forward. “And she is even more cautious than I am about taking a chance. I’m the one who has to prove how much she means to me. Hell, I can’t tell her how I feel yet. I’m going to have to show her.”

A smile touched Brad’s lips. “Well, this is certainly a surprise. I wish you the best.”

“Thanks, man. And you might as well know one of her concerns right now is what’s going to happen to Sunnie. She’s gotten attached to her.”

He paused a moment and then said, “Since you’re here I have a video I want you to watch.”

“A video?”

“Yes. I want you to look at that video I pulled that shows a woman placing the car seat containing the baby on the TCC doorstep. All we got is a good shot of her hands.”

“And you think I might be able to recognize some woman’s hands?” Brad asked.

Zeke shrugged. “Hey, it’s worth a try.” He picked up the remote to start rolling the videotape on the wide screen in his office.

Moments later they looked up when there was a tap on the door. He then remembered his secretary had taken part of the morning off. “Come in.”

Summer entered. “Hi, guys, sorry to interrupt. But you know it’s fundraiser time for the shelter and I—”

She stopped talking when she glanced at the wide screen where Zeke had pressed Pause and the image had frozen on a pair of hands. “Why are you watching a video of Diane Worth’s hands?”

Both men stared at her. Zeke asked in astonishment, “You recognize those hands?”

Summer smiled. “Yes, but only because of that tiny scar across the back of her right hand, which would have been a bigger scar if Dr. Harris hadn’t sutured it the way he did. And then there’s that little mole between the third and fourth finger that resembles a star.”
